Capcom Announces Umbrella Chronicles Sequel, RE Remakes For Wii

Just as Capcom's long-awaited Resident Evil 5 is set to launch on next-gen platforms, the company's announcing a major initiative for the seminal franchise on Wii.

Capcom announced Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, a sequel to Wii-exclusive on-rails shooter Umbrella Chronicles slated for this Winter. The company describes Umbrella Chronicles as "a huge success," and the sequel promises "a more in-depth co-op experience" and a story aimed at expanding on the plot of Resident Evil 2.

At the same time, the company says it plans a new Resident Evil "Classics" line for Wii that will bring GameCube's Resident Evil and Resident Evil Zero to Nintendo's platform. They're planned as remakes tailored for the Wii controls, and each will be value-priced at $29.99.

"We are very excited to be bringing the sequel to Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles to the Wii as it’s the perfect fit for the platform," said Capcom marketing VP Mona Hamilton. "We are always looking for new ways to give Capcom fans a chance to experience our games."

Too bad they're not re-releasing on PS3 or 360, just based on graphics alone. I would love to see another RE1 remake, but in 1080p please!

If you're referring to this new rail shooter Tom, it would play terribly on a 360 or PS3 using their default controllers.

Tim,

there's RE4 on the PC, it supports higher resolutions than 1080p, but it was an abomination of a port made rather cheaply and poorly. UbiSoft did clean up the textures afterwards and offer an update, but compared to other PC games, it still looks rather blurry.

----

And on this 1080p infatuation that most console guys seem to swoon over... Neither console's game library supports this resolution across the board. The 360 likes to advertise 1080p on the box, but most of these games are really 720p upscaled to that rez. At least with Sony's games, they will only list that rez if the game supports it natively.

The majority of games on these consoles, especially the AAA titles are only 720p, if that... Halo 3 is 640p. Even at this so so resolution, neither console can maintain a constant 30 fps, so I have to wonder why you guys are asking for 1080p, when neither console can handle it at a detail level many of us expect now days? RE5 is only 720p and it dips below 30 fps, so imagine how poorly it would run at 1080p -- so not upscaled.

It would play horrible in PS3 with the controller. With a gun controller, it would play fine enough, however Capcom would have to develop its own gun system, unless you hope for Capcom to use a peripheral gun created by Namco? The alternatives are selling to Time Crisis 4 install base (quarter of a million maybe?) or selling a HD game with a gun for USD 80? Doesn't make too much sense.

I think there is a misunderstanding about why they are creating port. The Wii public is made of gamers, new gamers, and lapsed ones. From those, the last two have not likely played a RE game before, and it makes sense to release games that may have not been played as an alternative for adult titles.

HD will eventually become mainstream. But it will take one more generation.
