Xbox 360 Passes 1 Million Milestone In Japan, PS3 At 3 Million

The Xbox 360 sold over 1 million units of hardware in Japan, according to new data released by Famitsu magazine publisher and research firm Enterbrain.

Enterbrain’s data, as translated by blog site Kotaku, show that 1,001,191 units of the console have been sold in Japan since its launch in December 2005. Rival chart compiler Media Create last week put the platform’s total at 969,117 units.

The figure is already far in advance of the less than 500,000 unit lifetime figure for the original Xbox in Japan. Unlike Microsoft’s first console, the Xbox 360 has been supported by a number of, often exclusive, Japanese role-playing titles, with the likes of Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Tales of Vesperia, and Infinite Undiscovery all performing strongly in their home territory.

In the same report, the PlayStation 3 lifetime total in Japan is reported to have just passed the 3 million mark, with Media Create last week putting the total at 2,947,753 units.

Nintendo DS and PSP also recently passed their own milestone lifetime figures in Japan, with combined sales of Nintendo’s portable at 26 million and the DSi model alone at 2 million. In the same week, PSP hit the 12 million lifetime-to-date mark.

Good to see these numbers up. Hopefully this will mean more of that "quirky" Japanese software being developed, especially for PS3. I really enjoy all of the rpgs, srpgs, and shumps that seem to be missing on the current-gen systems (at least quantity wise), that are still being made for PS2.

It's good to see the 360 have some respectable numbers in a market that was deemed hostile towards western hardware. sure it's clearly loosing, but i'm surprised to see the numbers even that high.

There are only 3 Million PS3's in Japan?
That is really quite insignificant compared to other markets.
