California State Rep Proposes Limiting Day Care Game Time

A California state assemblywoman has introduced a bill aiming to limit the amount of "screen time" -- including video game play -- to which children are exposed in child day care facilities.

As proposed in Assembly Bill 627, introduced by Julia Brownley (D-Santa Monica), exposure to television, video games, and computers would "be limited to a maximum of one hour per day and shall be limited to educational programming or programs that encourage movement."

The bill will be discussed in committee hearings starting this week, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

Based on the language of the bill, software like Wii Fit, Dance Dance Revolution, or Yourself!Fitness might be allowed, as they "encourage movement."

The bill also mentions "educational programming; in many cases, games like SimCity, Civilization, and Age of Empires have been used in elementary schools in the past to foster education or interest in historical and social topics.
