PS3 Outsells Wii In Japan For Second Consecutive Month

Famitsu publisher Enterbrain said today that Sony's PlayStation 3 outsold the Nintendo Wii in April in Japan, thanks in large part to the release of the Blu-ray movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, which comes with a demo for the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII.

It's the second consecutive month in Japan that PS3 has outsold Nintendo Wii, the current worldwide leader in hardware sales.

Reuters translated Enterbrain's figures, which showed that domestic sales of PS3 in April were 108,530 for the four weeks through April 26. Wii sold 67,116 during the period, while Xbox 360 sold 27,381 in the region.

PS3 also outsold the Wii in March in Japan, selling 146,948 vs. 99,335, respectively, due to strong sales of Capcom's Resident Evil 5 and Sega's Yakuza 3. It marked the first time in 16 months that PS3 outsold the Wii in the region.

Total PS3 sales in Japan are around three million units. Wii and Xbox 360 surpassed the eight million and one million mark, respectively, in Japan last month.

Wii sales have been flagging in Japan over the past months. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said in early April, that "the Wii is in the most unhealthy condition since it hit the Japanese market."
