Eidos Montreal Confirms Thief 4 In Development

Following months of fan speculation, Eidos Montreal confirmed today that it is working on Thief 4, the latest entry in the well-regarded stealth franchise.

"We’re in the early development stages for Thief 4, but this is an incredibly ambitious and exciting project for Eidos," says general manager Stephane D’Astous.

D'Astous says it's "too early for us to offer any specific game details," and that Eidos Montreal is currently focused on adding to the development staff, which already comprises the studio's "best core team." Eidos Montreal is also currently developing Deus Ex 3.

Venerated Looking Glass Studios developed the series' first two Thief installments, The Dark Project and The Metal Age in 1998 and 2000, respectively.

The third title, Deadly Shadows was released in 2004, and was developed at Ion Storm with the support of Looking Glass veterans who migrated there after the studio closed.

YES! Please just make it as awesome as the first one. Those were some good times.

Oh yeah, that's awesome!

Oh man, with the lighting technology we have these days, the stealth mechanics could be improved so much and made so much funner. If anyone from the original thief series is working on this game, hopefully he'll keep them all on track, as Thief is pretty much the only game series with stealth that worked.

I could have swore that Metal Gear, Tenchu, Splinter Cell, The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Vampire: Bloodlines and many others have stealth that works (some to much greater extents than others). You're insulting quite a bit of titles by saying only Thief had working stealth. As for the fancy lighting effects we have now, I believe it changes only the visual representation more so than it affects gameplay, any effects it may have on gameplay would most likely be indirect.

Anyway, I definitely will be keeping an eye out for Thief 4. Was Eidos Montreal a part of Square Enix's acquisition?

Sorry, I looked it up and answered my own question. Yes, Eidos Montreal is also a part of Square Enix now.

I really hope this is a "PC" game at heart and not another BioShock.. But then again, developers like money. :(

Wait, which elder scrolls had good stealth? And I must admit to not having played most of those other games XD All I know is I've played a lot with BAD stealth mechanics... Thief has been a rather high standard for me.

Unfortunately, lighting technology has nothing to do with the stealth mechanics - this is in a way the age-old problem for stealth games: how do you define areas of 'light' and 'darkness' within your levels so that your AI behave as if they're seeing the same beautifully rendered lighting effects as the player?

Exciting news nonetheless! Who knows - maybe they will come up with some great advance in the stealth 'em up genre.

Yay for Thief 4!

The Thief series is not the only one with working stealth mechanics but I think it is the best in the stealth genre.

Chris Melby, if we can believe Eidos Montreal, Deus Ex 3 is a PC game first, so there's a good chance the same is true for Thief 4. :)

Daniel Ferlise, no, there aren't any of them on the team (yet?) but EM has been in contact with them during the concept stage, so they should be on the right track.

I hope those taffers will have something for us at GDC Canada or at E3, I need more info! :D
