Report: Bionic Commando Developer GRIN Sees Major Layoffs

According to multiple sources, Swedish-headquartered developer GRIN (Bionic Commando, Wanted) has seen major layoffs affecting all three of its major offices -- in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Barcelona.

While no official company statement has been made, reports started percolating early yesterday, firstly via the CGSociety.org forums, of layoffs at the firm.

GRIN has just completed three major current-gen projects - Wanted: Weapons Of Fate and Terminator Salvation for Warner Bros, and Bionic Commando for Capcom, with no newly announced games as of yet.

Subsequently, game weblog Kotaku claimed independent anonymous verification that as many as 50% or more of the developer's more than 200 staff have been let go.

In addition, an unaffected employee of the Stockholm GRIN headquarters commented on Polycount.net that there had indeed been layoffs at the firm's main Swedish office.

Gamasutra has contacted GRIN for comment on the layoffs, but had received no official statement as of press time. We'll update with information as it becomes available.

Such a pity seeing so many nordic developers also being affected by the financial crisis (among other things). I had personally always thought the northern european devs would be somewhat resistant to this. This was before personally getting in the thick of this situation myself, though. Oh well. Given enough time, I'm sure the nordic studios will be up on their feet again.
