Saling The World: Ghostbusters Tops U.S. Xbox 360 Charts

Gamasutra's weekly column, "Saling The World", covers the top five sellers for every available platform in the United States, Japan, and Europe, providing an important update of sales patterns worldwide.

This week's charts, with data taken from June 18th, 2009, find Ghostbusters heading Xbox 360 sales results in North America, while The Sims 3 continues to dominate worldwide PC software sales.

Data for "Saling The World" comes courtesy of the public sales information on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.co.jp, with sales split out for each platform and territory, and pre-orders disregarded. This results in a true sense of what games are selling worldwide on the real-time updated service, as follows:

Nintendo Wii
North America: 1. EA Sports Active (EA Sports), 2. Wii Fit (Nintendo), 3. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 Wii MotionPlus Bundle (EA Sports), 4. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo), 5. Wii Play (Nintendo).

Japan: 1. Wii Fit (Nintendo), 2. Shape Boxing: Wii de Enjoy Diet! (Rocket Company), 3. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo), 4. Wii Sports (Nintendo), 5. Wii de Asobu: Pikmin 2 (Nintendo).

UK: 1. EA Sports Active (EA Sports), 2. Wii Fit (Nintendo), 3. My Fitness Coach (Ubisoft), 4. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo), 5. Wii Play (Nintendo).

EA Sports Active is back on top this week in North America, as last week's chart champion Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 falls to third place. Wii Fit continues to do brisk business at second place, as Wii Play replaces Grand Slam Tennis at fifth.

Arc Rise Fantasia and Wii de Asobu: Chibi-Robo! drop out of the running in Japan, meanwhile, as the fitness titles Wii Fit and Shape Boxing lead this week's regional results.

Xbox 360
North America: 1. Ghostbusters (Atari), 2. Red Faction: Guerrilla (THQ), 3. Call of Duty: World at War (Activision), 4. Prototype (Activision), 5. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Activision).

Japan: 1. Prototype (Activision), 2. Shin Sangoku Musou 5 Empires (Koei), 3. Mass Effect (Microsoft), 4. Chikyuu Boueigun 3 -- Xbox 360 Platinum Collection (D3 Publisher), 5. BioShock -- Xbox 360 Platinum Collection (Spike).

UK: 1. Prototype (Activision), 2. Resident Evil 5 (Capcom), 3. Call of Duty: World at War (Activision), 4. Red Faction: Guerrilla (THQ), 5. Gears of War 2 (Microsoft).

Ghostbusters tops Xbox 360 software sales in the United States in its first week on store shelves. Red Faction: Guerrilla is pushed to second place in this week's results, as X-Men Origins: Wolverine returns to the top five following a drop in price at Amazon.

In Japan, Activision's Prototype steals the top spot away from Shin Sangoku Musou 5 Empires. Mass Effect takes third, while Chikyuu Boueigun 3 (Earth Defense Force 2017) and BioShock follow at fourth and fifth.

PlayStation 3
North America: 1. Resistance: Fall of Man -- Greatest Hits (SCEA), 2. InFamous (SCEA), 3. Ghostbusters (Atari), 4. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots -- Greatest Hits (Konami), 5. UFC 2009 Undisputed (THQ).

Japan: 1. Senjou no Valkyria -- PlayStation 3 the Best (Sega), 2. Demon's Souls (SCEI), 3. Shin Sangoku Musou 5 Empires (Koei), 4. Prototype (Activision), 5. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots -- PlayStation 3 the Best (Konami).

UK: 1. Ghostbusters (Atari), 2. InFamous (SCEA), 3. Prototype (Activision), 4. LittleBigPlanet (SCEA), 5. UFC 2009 Undisputed (THQ).

A discounted Resistance: Fall of Man heads this week's North American PlayStation 3 sales at Amazon. Metal Gear Solid 4 also finds a resurgence of interest this week, after recently being rereleased as part of Sony's budget-priced "Greatest Hits" lineup.

Elsewhere, Senjou no Valkyria and Demon's Souls head platform sales in Japan, as Ghostbusters, Prototype, and InFamous lead in the UK.

PlayStation 2
North America: 1. Rock Band Special Edition (MTV Games), 2. Ghostbusters (Atari), 3. Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection (Konami), 4. God of War (SCEA), 5. Shadow of the Colossus (SCEA).

Japan: 1. Sengoku Basara 2 -- PlayStation 2 Best Price! (Capcom), 2. Fate/Stay Night [Realta Nua] -- PlayStation 2 the Best (Kadokawa Shoten), 3. Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix+ -- Ultimate Hits (Square Enix), 4. Sengoku Basara 2 Eiyuu Gaiden -- PlayStation 2 the Best (Capcom), 5. Okami -- PlayStation 2 the Best (Capcom).

UK: 1. SingStar: ABBA (SCEE), 2. FIFA 09 (EA Sports), 3. Guitar Hero: Metallica (Activision), 4. SingStar: Queen (SCEE), 5. Disney Princess: Enchanted Journey (Disney).

Ghostbusters makes a strong sales impression in its first week of release on the PlayStation 2, finishing as the platform's second-best seller in the United States. The title's low retail price of $19.99 puts it in close competition with longtime chart favorites like Rock Band, Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection, and Shadow of the Colossus.

PC
North America: 1. The Sims 3 (EA Games), 2. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (Blizzard), 3. World of Warcraft Battle Chest (Blizzard), 4. The Sims 3 -- Collector's Edition (EA Games), 5. Ghostbusters (Atari).

Japan: 1. The Sims 3 (EA Games), 2. The Sims 3 -- Collector's Edition (EA Games), 3. Ragnarok Online RJC2009 Vol. 1: Win the Victory (E Frontier), 4. SimCity 4 Deluxe (EA Games), 5. Monster Hunter Frontier Online Season 5.0 Premium Package (Capcom).

UK: 1. The Sims 3 (EA Games), 2. ArmA 2 (505 Games), 3. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (Blizzard), 4. Football Manager 2009 (Sega), 5. Mass Effect (EA Games).

The PC version of Ghostbusters only manages a fifth place finish in North America this week, as multiple versions of The Sims 3 and World of Warcraft continue to dominate sales on the platform. The Sims 3 finishes as this week's biggest software seller across all platforms in all regions, despite flagging sales for the USB drive-bundled Collector's Edition.

Nintendo DS
North America: 1. The Quest Trio (Activision), 2. Mario Kart DS (Nintendo), 3. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo), 4. Pokemon Platinum (Nintendo), 5. Professor Layton and the Curious Village (Nintendo).

Japan: 1. Tomodachi Collection (Nintendo), 2. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (Square Enix), 3. Gyakuten Kenji (Capcom), 4. Sloane to MacHale no Nazo no Monogatari (Level 5), 5. Mugen Kouro (Sega).

UK: 1. Professor Layton and the Curious Village (Nintendo), 2. Pokemon Platinum (Nintendo), 3. More Brain Training (Nintendo), 4. Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force (Disney), 5. Walk with Me! (Nintendo).

A recent "Lightning Deal" at Amazon puts the minigame compilation The Quest Trio at the top of this week's Nintendo DS sales results in the United States. Last week's chart leader Professor Layton falls to fifth place, meanwhile, as The Legendary Starfy drops out of the regional top five.

Nintendo's Tomodachi Collection leads Japanese Nintendo DS sales in its first week of release, leaving Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Gyakuten Kenji to take second and third place. Sega's Mugen Kouro slips to fifth place, while Level 5's Sloane to MacHale no Nazo no Monogatari moves up to finish fourth.

North America: 1. God of War: Chains of Olympus (SCEA), 2. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (Square Enix), 3. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (Rockstar), 4. Sega Genesis Collection (Sega), 5. Star Wars Battlefront II (LucasArts).

UK: 1. FIFA 09 (EA Sports), 2. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (Rockstar), 3. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 (EA Sports), 4. Rock Band Unplugged (EA Games), 5. Resistance: Retribution (SCEA).

Amazon's initial shipment of last week's PSP chart leader Class of Heroes has since sold out, and the title finishes outside of this week's North American top five. God of War: Chains of Olympus rises up to take its place at first place, as Crisis Core, Liberty City Stories, and Sega Genesis Collection follow close behind.

I bought the PC version of Ghostbusters. I know, it lacks multiplayer, but I like that platform. I got the xbox 360 version for my kids on their gamefly.com account. So, I am missing out on very little. And as a single player game it ranks as one of the best movie games I have every played. Period.

And sure it is consolized. But just barely and the graphics are pretty good. I love the machinery on your backpack.
