Moore Challenges Obama On Games, Fitness

EA Sports boss Peter Moore would like President Obama to try EA Sports Active to experience the possible health benefits of some kinds of video games.

At the annual meeting of the American Medical Association in Chicago recently, Obama said that a healthy U.S. population means "going for a run or hitting the gym, and raising our children to step away from the video games and spend more time playing outside."

On his official blog, Moore supported the President's sentiments on more physical activity as a key part of a healthy lifestyle, but suggested: "Of course, I can’t resist pointing out that while I’ve always wholeheartedly endorsed moderation in anything you do, including playing games, it may be time for the President and his family to put their Wii to good use and fire up the 30-Day Challenge with EA Sports Active."

"This is a 'game' even the President may not want to 'step away' from," added Moore -- even noting that despite the President's visible state of "good shape," the lunge exercises in EA Sports Active might give him a fair challenge.

Moore lauded not only the opportunities for exercise afforded by the Wii's motion controls, but the initiatives unveiled by Sony and Microsoft at E3 to incorporate full-body gaming on their platforms as well, calling them "refreshing" and praising their potential to enhance fitness gaming.

"In fact, I’d be willing to bet there are more consoles getting far more use in American homes than there is exercise equipment, so it’s up to us to continue to use the platform for good," concluded Moore.

I know it's the guy's job to promote his product, but this just seems so cheesy and forced.

What do you expect from the guy who ran SOA into the ground?
I kid, I kid. But he did sell Shenmue to the Xbox, the bastard!

Well I for one won't be fighting, I strongly dislike Obama. Although Obama is right in that people, especially kids, need to exercise more, I just think there are better things to put down than video games like TV. At least with video games you are "working out" your brain, unlike TV/movies. The thing about games is that they can teach kids things like money management or any number of things that schools struggle to teach. TV and movies not so much. If you look at history games are one of the oldest methods of teaching. Games like chess and checkers helped to teach strategy. What makes them so good at teaching these things is one they might show how the knowledge is actually useful in the real world, and two because the people playing them are actually having fun playing them.
