People Can Fly reclaims its independence from Epic Games

The studio responsible for Gears of War: Judgment, Epic Games Poland, has reclaimed its original name of People Can Fly this week amid a shift in ownership that sees the studio becoming fully independent of Epic Games.

"The desire to create our own game...was stronger than all the benefits of being a part of Epic group," reads a company blog post announcing the deal, the financial terms of which were not disclosed. "We are lucky that Tim Sweeney as well as Epic’s board and its executive team members are fair and honest people and allowed us to reach for our dreams. "

Epic acquired People Can Fly outright in 2012, while it was working on Judgment, after taking a majority stake in the Warsaw-based studio in 2007. 

By 2013 the studio had been rebranded and set to the task of helping Epic develop its forthcoming Fortnite, a task People Can Fly will continue to carry out now that ownership of the company "has returned to the local leadership" alongside development of its own unannounced Unreal Engine 4 project.
