Games For Windows - Live 3.0 Launches With New In-Game Features

Games For Windows - Live 3.0 Launches With New In-Game Features

About two years after Microsoft introduced the fledgling Games for Windows - Live, the company on Thursday released version 3.0 of the online platform, which adds new features such as an in-game marketplace, in-game account management, and new anti-piracy measures.

The in-game marketplace allows users to purchase items for a game from within game, which wasn't possible before. It's part of Microsoft's effort to streamline digital distribution on gaming PCs, which could potentially attract more sales-generating clicks.

After a user purchases content, the system will download and install the content while the user is still in the game. Gamers can also re-download previous purchases if necessary. In-game account management of credit cards and player profiles is also now possible.

Microsoft also said that starting in the fall, publishers will have the option to implement two new anti-piracy solutions. Microsoft detailed those options:

- Server Side Authentication links the game license to your Gamertag. The advantage of this method is that it allows installation of the game onto any PC, anywhere — only you can access the Live service from the game. Server Side Authentication has no affect on offline play.

- Zero Day Piracy Protection keeps games from launching before the street date the publisher has set for the game.

The update is available as a free download today.

Games for Windows - Live is an important piece to the puzzle in Microsoft's effort to keep up with the evolving digital distribution landscape. The system, which also has community features, is up against other platforms such as Steam, Direct2Drive, and Impulse. But Microsoft hopes to leverage its position as the owner of Windows and its ability to tap into the Xbox Live community to separate itself from competitors.

I think the correct response here is: ROFLMAO.

The big 'improvements' in Live 3.0? Well, let's see... More opportunities to pay for stuff. And more ways for Microsoft to snoop on me on the off chance I've pirated something. Cool!

This announcement could easily be describing some new form of commercial malware. All that's missing is any hint of why I might want to load it onto my gaming PC.

It would be good if Microsoft could avoid using Windows Live on Steam releases. Attempting to get GTAIV running on PC is painful. This might be acceptable if Games for Windows Live did something useful, like centralized save games, but no such luck... attempting to install my copy of GTA on another computer, all I got was a record of my 'achievements'.

I agree the UI for GFWL is just awful. Yesterday I had to reinstall Steam, GTAIV, and GFWL and it was so annoying. Not only is installation a chore, but the patching process is equally FUBAR. Did 17 blind monkeys get together and design this turd?

GFWL is a scourge on PC gaming. It annoys me that if I want to play GTA IV, or SFIV, I have to log into it. I refuse to use a live account, so log in with an offline account, so it always likes to remind me that I won't be able to collect "stickers" to share with the console community. I would prefer that any game that has this SUCK added to it, at least behave like Fallout 3, where as I can play the game and not be bothered with having to log in.

And why the freak, does my STEAM copy of SFIV have to use GFWL? It's an inferior online service all around...

Yeah! Another release of absolute junk. Terrible, terrible service. Steam is better in every single way (well, except achievements IMO). Why does the GFWL team insist on this Xbox fashion interface? We have a mouse for **** sake let us use it! Right now its way faster using the keyboard or a Xbox gamepad. Just sad

I can see some crazy problems arising from "Zero Day Piracy Protection." Imagine if the GFWL servers shut down on launch day. The mess it would create would just give Microsoft bad press. Also, why would I want Server Side Auth'ing if I could just disable GFWL and get the same effect? If Microsoft wants GFWL to go anywhere, they need to steal features from programs like Steam and Impulse then claim that they made it first, sue Valve and Stardock, then be the only competitor left.

I would like to see an arcade marketplace with GFW Live. Community games even. OR they could morph this into an app store like front end.
