GameCareerGuide Feature: Book Extract - Mastering Unreal Technology

In this book extract, GameCareerGuide presents several tutorials based around getting a level up and running in Epic's Unreal Engine 3 -- with plenty of screenshots and step-by-step instructions taken from Mastering Unreal Technology, Volume I: Introduction to Level Design with Unreal Engine 3.

The extract begins with a tutorial on creating a room in Unreal Engine 3 and moves from there to adding a second room, connecting the two, and onward, presenting a ground-up, basics-oriented way of learning to work with the program for the beginning designer.

From the intro to the piece by the book's authors: "The power of this engine can seem overwhelming -- especially when you're first starting out... You ultimately need to develop skills in many different areas. To give you a feel for the real experience of working with Unreal Engine, we designed this chapter to get your hands dirty with as many aspects of the Unreal Editor as possible."

The parts of the book extracted for GCG's feature "do not contain in-depth explanations over each action you perform, but rather provide a quick run-and-gun crash course on the Unreal Editor, enabling you to acquaint yourself with many of the actions you'll be performing throughout this book."

The extracts from the book, 'Mastering Unreal Technology, Volume I: Introduction to Level Design with Unreal Engine 3', by Jason Busby, Zak Parrish, and Jeff Wilson, are now available for reading on Gamasutra's education-focused sister site, GameCareerGuide.
