Blizzard registers trademark for Compete eSports service

August 11, 2015 | By Christian Nutt

Newsbrief: With its own MOBA, Heroes of the Storm, joining popular competitive games StarCraft II and Hearthstone, it's no wonder that Blizzard appears to be booting up its own eSports service.

A filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (via IGN, originally uncovered on Reddit) reveals that the company plans to call that service "Compete." The description furnished to the service to back up the filing describes its function like this:

"Providing an online non-downloadable Internet-based system application featuring technology enabling users to organize and promote e-sports tournaments, to create and customize tournament brackets and ladders, track tournament progress, maintain related statistics, and post results."

There's no word on when the service might launch or what form it will ultimately take, though, as there has been no formal announcement as yet.

Update: It has been pointed out that this filing appears to relate to TeSPA's Compete series of tournaments and web service; the organization runs tournaments for college students with Blizzard's games. TeSPA's founders joined Blizzard's eSports team in 2013.
