Best of GameSetWatch: From Han Solo Adventures to Evony

[Every week, Gamasutra will highlight a week's worth of alternative video gaming news, media, and other curiosities from sister blog GameSetWatch, as written by editor Eric Caoili.]

This week brings a big announcement for Derek Yu's much-loved roguelike/platformer Spelunky, a preview of Brazil's Guitar Hero clone for the somehow-still-alive Mega Drive/Genesis, and a round of marvelous prototypes from the newly resurrected Experimental Games Project.

You'll also want to read about one Star Wars fan's quest to create an episodic LucasArts-style adventure game based on Han Solo, and Evony (the same MMO behind famously bawdy online ads) threatening to sue a vocal critic.

This past week's top stories:

- Yu Releases Spelunky 1.0, Announces XBLA Port
"Releasing in 2010, the XBLA version will include new graphics, audio, and features. Yu is also considering adding new items, monsters, and special modes, adding that achievements make 'a lot of sense' for a game like Spelunky."

- TecToy's Mega Drive 4 Guitar Idol
"The system will include two six-button controllers, a five-button Guitar Hero/Rock Band-style guitar controller, and 87 built-in games (Altered Beast, Golden Axe III, FIFA 2008, etc.) -- all of which were also included in the previous Mega Drive 3 model, with the exception of Guitar Idol."

- Concept Art From Free Radical's Star Wars Battlefront IV
"Though it's rumored the UK studio spent two years working on Star Wars Battlefront III before it went into bankruptcy administration and was acquired by Crytek last February, new art shows that Free Radical Design (now Crytek UK) was also in the pre-production stage with Star Wars Battlefront IV for PS3 and Xbox 360."

- Experimental Gameplay Project Debuts Prototypes From Gray, Saltsman, and More
"In Canabalt, your character races across gray rooftops, jumping over obstacles and picking up speed to throw himself over greater distances and through glass windows. The silhouettes of giant mecha lumber in the devastated, smoking skyline, sending ships to buzz past the rattling screen and robots to crash in front of you."

- SCUMM Fan Fiction: Han Solo Adventures
"... this LucasArts-inspired project will feature "a relatively mature style along the lines of Fate of Atlantis and Full Throttle. It will focus on the smuggler's hijinks prior to A New Hope, so don't expect any trips to the Death Star or Endor."

- Evony Threatens To Sue Over 'Defamatory' Articles
"... n Australian law firm representing UMGE sent notice that it would sue [Evony critic Bruce Everiss] for damages and defamation unless he removed the articles from his site, published a form apology, and offered to "pay compensation for loss suffered by Evony."

- 8BP's 100th Release: Two-Disc Blip Festival 2008 Album
"Chiptune record label 8bitpeoples and film crew 2 Player Productions announced a double-CD compilation album featuring 32 live performances from each of the artists that took the stage at last year's epic three-day Blip Festival concert in New York City."

- Art.tech Festival Brings Together Experimental Games, Alcohol
"San Francisco's alternative art space The Lab will host art.tech, an interactive works festival looking to explore 'the full range of possibilities available through gaming as a medium' and promising an attractive mix of digital art, experimental video games, and alcohol."
