LucasArts Announces PC/XBLA Puzzler Lucidity , Promises New Properties

Developer and publisher LucasArts has formally revealed its upcoming PC and Xbox Live Arcade puzzle-tinted platformer Lucidity -- and the company is painting the game as the beginning of a new effort that will encourage more internal development at the company.

Launching in just under a month, Lucidity has the player protecting a young girl as she wanders through the worlds of her dreams, rendered in a distinctive style reminiscent of paper collage.

The game is being developed by the same team responsible for the recent successful PC and Xbox Live Arcade special edition re-release of 1990's The Secret of Monkey Island.

LucasArts president Darrel Rodriguez is said to be a fan of LucasArts' arguably-dormant legacy of constantly developing internal original titles.

Lucidity comes from our effort at LucasArts to form several small internal development teams and give them the creative freedom to make games that surprise, amaze and inspire,” Rodriguez said, adding that Secret and Lucidity "are just the beginning of this effort."

After more than a decade of producing acclaimed original games all throughout the 1990s, particularly in the adventure genre, LucasArts in recent years has focused much more heavily on Star Wars licensed games, with actual internal development slowing to a crawl. Lucidity is the first original game game developed within the studio since 2003's poorly-received RTX: Red Rock.

Wonderful news! Lucasarts holds a dear space in my gamer-heart; they're the people that made me fall in love with interactive experiences in the first place, years ago. Can't wait to see what comes out of this.

The "old" LucasArts is by far one of my favorite developers, but this new bunch really needs to prove themselves. I'm happy with their current direction, but I'm still hesitant of their quality. Monkey Island SE, which I bought for both my Touch and PC, seems like it was rushed -- if not for the classic mode, I probably would not have been interested.

Anyways, if the price is right on this new game, I'll buy it. I like the simple visual direction, I just hope it's not sloppy like MI SE's updated art, which didn't do Guybrush's appearance any justice, let alone most of the characters.

I've not played the Special Edition, and didn't intend to, but I thought I'd go hunt down some good comparisons so I knew what you were referring to. I must say, I'm not impressed with the redone artwork at all. It seems to have lost its charm. For anyone interested, there's good comparisons between the art available here:

As a side note... since when has there been an edit button on comments?

That blown up "3D" version of Guybrush is hideous! And I thought his hair was ugly small.

Well, if anything, it's worth buying for the classic game mode. :) That's why I bough it.

I think that the newer team took a game that wasn't serious about itself, too serious. They really didn't seem to fully get the game, hence Guybrush no longer comes off as a dork, now he looks like another noun that starts with a d... Bleh...

I also think that they were overwhelmed with this job, because the quality of background art all looks rushed. I see they made extensive use of the lasso tool, but messily, just to get things done quickly.

I do like the new music, as it's different, but compared to my original CD version of MI, which also has high quality music, it's kind of somber.

Anyways, overall this new art doesn't feel right to me. It clashes with the humor of the game IMO. I really hope that if they decide to work on a MI2 SE, that they'll bring Ron on as creative director from the get go.

Oh, one last ramble. The control updates for SE are bad. Even on my Touch, I prefer using the classic mode, as I can get things done in less steps.

The edit button was added a few weeks ago, if I'm recalling correctly? They made an announcement about it and other changes. :)

Well... my next question would be, where were they referencing the Guybrush for this version of the game? It didn't really look like Guybrush from other versions I've seen. I'd have thought if they were looking to redo the art style whilst still keeping a "classic" feel, they'd have gone with something more along the lines of Monkey Island 3, which still feels dorkish: http://adventuresforever.tripod.com/Monkey3/guybrush.jpg

But, if they were going for a reimagining of Guybrush, that's a fair call too. I just don't think it worked as well as it should have. Moving from Monkey Island 1 to Monkey Island 3 was a case of "oh cool. That's what he looks like in more detail". Knowing what he looked like in MI3 and then comparing to MI:SE, the reaction is "that doesn't look like the Guybrush I know".

That being said, looking around for images of MI2, it seems that MI2 and MI5 are closer related to each other than they are to 1 and 3. It seems that Guybrush in MISE looks closest to Guybrush out of MI4, which I haven't played. Hence feeling unfamiliar.

Edit button!!! when? where? yuhuuuu! I will finally be able to correct my many mistakes in english :D

and about the news: I don't like the guybrush from the new telltalle episodes, I cannot say about the SE because I didnt tried it yet!!! but I like much more the guybrush from MI3 that the one from the new episodes...

and the lucidity game sounds a lot like BRAID....ad least to me, i´m the only one who thinks that?

Actually I think current LucasArts direction is just going with a flow which "Sam & Max" renewal created. The only problem is that they have missed that flow in the first place. It took long years waiting until their copyrights expire and make a chance to renew the game by someone else. Probably after renewing all classic hits, they will get back to SW and stuck again for a decade.
