Square Enix's Wada Sees New Nintendo Console By 2011

Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada expects Nintendo to release a new console by 2011, likely an updated device more directly positioned against the current PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and possibly with a new input device.

Although Wada told the Financial times he feels Microsoft's Project Natal is "fantastic and could become standard," the exec feels new motion control devices from Sony and Nintendo are unlikely to have a major impact.

"Present game machines already have a lot of functions: they are a network terminal, a Blu-ray or DVD player, and a gaming machine," said Wada. "Compared to these three pillars, the [new motion] controllers are quite limited, so the impact may be small. They are an extension of the gaming function."

However, he noted that a strong release slate from the start could help drive the success of new input devices and help them take root more quickly.

I'm the person who dont think anything new is coming from anybody soon. I do think When Nintendo release there new system it will compete with its competition, who ever they may be. Nintendo Next system will use many of the Wii add-on, but the new controllers will be more precise. The Wii will get Nintendo out of the Kiddie league with maturer games. I'm just not thinking the global economy will allow any company to take the chance and launch a new system. Nintendo will continue to refine there(NES Zap gun tech. The tech they use on the 8-bit NES to play Duck Hunt.) motion controller tech and release it for the Wii till the SuperWii is ready.

I agree with Issac. I don't see anyone ditching their boxes in favor of newer ones anytime soon - ESPECIALLY Nintendo, for the reasons David mentions. The XBox wasn't the success that the Wii is and Microsoft wanted to be first to the market to get the jump on Sony - Nintendo's circumstances with the Wii are much different.

There's no point getting a new Nintendo console right now, they can't compete with the graphics powerhouses like the PS3 or 360. That's just fact. In fact, you can get a free 80g PS3 right now online. Just click the link and follow the instructions and claim your free gift!

@Andre: Wii Fit is just shy of selling 22 million units.

@Doug: yet, how many games do use it? That is what is going to happen with MS and Sony projects, very few games will *require* it to play. And the ones that will not require it will work the same with the standard controllers. Thus why buy it?

@Fábio: Fair enough. Which is probably why I haven't heard of too many 3rd party companies getting excited about Natal.

Oh hello Mr. Viral Marketer, how are you today?

@Doug

Not to mention that if you watch the Natal videos from MS the controls don't seem that precise. It's a bit of a paradigm shift to go from using fine finger controls on the controler to the exaggerated movements seen in the video.

Honestly, how much fun is playing Godzilla for 5 hours? or even 2?

I look forward to an upgraded Nintendo Platform.

@Andre: How much fun is "Lean to the left. Now lean to the right."?
Still, 22 million copies of that sold. ;)

Huh...

Seriously, I am still craving to buy a PS2, and people want Wii2, PS4 and XBOXwhatevernumber already! Seriously, right now consoles can do pretty much anything that is needed for a game, can not you all stop a bit and make some good games instead of making awfull beautyfull games that are only 3% more prettier than the last one?

For example I spent my last weekend playing Burnout 3, Onimusha 4, Trackmania, Megadrive Sonic 1..
One of the most sold games is Counter-Strike, it keeps itself on the top sold list, and it is a particularly old game, why noone can realize this and focus on gameplay instead of kick-ass graphics that noone will see?

I am so happy that Sony is opening a new PS2 factory in my country :) I will buy finally a PS2 and cheap games ^^ I wanna buy Virtua Fighter 4, GTA III, Devil May Cry and Final Fantasy X \o/

Other then going to buy a ps2 for cheap games. The reason for all this horse power is better games. Gears, Fables, Call to Duties, just too short but looked great how many of use beat it and wasnt done playing yet.
FallOut 3 wasnt short but it could have been longer to complain. Fallout 3 good blend.
Say it with me
Gameplay! Gameplay! Gameplay! Gameplay! Gameplay!

I wonder if this Square Enix 'new Wii coming' is based on real information or a more subtle threat like like Activision gave Sony about their prices... (of course that one wasn't subtle at all).

@Isaac.

Fallout 3 gameplay existed already on Fallout 1 and 2 (But the FPS stuff...). Gears gameplay to me is just a normal FPS, no new generation stuff needed, you can do it even with a software rasterizer if you want, and the much praised "Sandbox" gameplay already existed on GTA 1, that was completly 2D, and is awesome (nothing beats standing on the train platform with a flamethrower in hand waiting for passengers to disembark and die grilled by the flames or the eletrical tracks when they flee...)

I dont think its based on anything information. If it is its probably the codename they caught. no body can say Nintendo sell more Wii's. What Nintendo can say is "Here is some money and take your time making a true Wii. I started to Design a game as soon as i heard about how the Wii controls. How do u go about submitting a game Idea or a Game Design Doc.? I acted out and explained the Gameplay to a few people and everybody who like game wanted to play it. Some even said if Nintendo wouldn't let a game like that on there systems too mature, but if something close came to my design they would buy a Wii.

LOL. Famous last words. The motion controlled PS3 and 360 won't have a major impact against Nintendo until Nintendo makes it relevant, the moment they roll out an HD Wii with a hard drive. Duh! No more price war. No more cheap development costs for Wii games vs. 360/PS3. No more back catalog advantage, because they already opened up the gates with the Wii one.

@ Doug, Fabio' and Andre
No one has sold a successful add on except Nintendo. This does not bode well for MS or Sony. To the "casual" consumer, I think Sony will have the upper hand. Their controller will look "Wii-like" and the public will get it. MS's on the other hand, not so much. After E3, it was only the "otakus" who were excited about it, and I don't see them (us?) buying Microsoft-fit. Let's face it. MS is not good at "family" games. And Sony seems to have lost their way, too. Even Rare Studios is wishing Nintendo would buy them back!! Yeah, Wii-fit has sold 22 mil, but name another game (not published by Nintendo) that has done that in the last 3 years, at the same price, with out any markdowns. I'm waiting.....
