TGS: Sony Announces PS3 Motion-Control Launch Titles

Sony has confirmed a number of launch titles for the Spring 2010 debut of its Motion Controller PS3 peripheral, including a new Ape Escape title and Echochrome 2, plus enhanced versions of Flower and Resident Evil 5.

In an announcement made during Tokyo Game Show, the company detailed the first-party SCE Worldwide Studios titles that will debut alongside the device next Spring, as well as confirming technical specifics on the peripheral.

The input device, still tentatively named "Motion Controller," is equipped with two motion sensors, a three-axes gyroscope and and a three-axes accelerometer that can detect the controller's angle and movement held in the user's hand.

Together with the PlayStation Eye camera for PS3, which can accurately track the absolute position of the controller, the controller can "detect the natural and intuitive movement of the hand and reflect the precise movement onto the game", according to Sony.

The sphere on the top of the Motion Controller is not only used to track the absolute position, but can also give visual feedback to users by changing the colors or the illuminating patterns of the sphere. The new controller is also equipped with a rumble feature.

The Motion Controller, which requires the user to own a PlayStation Eye camera to work correctly, combines to be "capable of recognizing and tracking a user's face and voice as well as body motion [and] can also output the player's image onto the TV screen."

The list of 2010 Sony-published titles which encompass "both Motion Controller dedicated and compatible titles" include new titles Ape Escape, Echochrome 2, Eccentric Slider, Sing and Draw, Champions of Time, Motion Party, The Shoot, and Tower.

Also being upgraded via software update to take advantage of the Motion Control device are existing PlayStation 3 games including PAIN, Flower, Hustle Kings, High Velocity Bowling, and EyePet.

In addition to this official announcement, a Japanese-language Sony press conference following Kaz Hirai's keynote showcased Capcom's Resident Evil 5: Director's Cut, an update of the game that includes motion control.

According to weblog Joystiq's coverage, Sony "also showed off LittleBigPlanet being controlled by two people, one wielding a motion wand while the other used a DualShock 3."

I wonder if they'll offer motion control functionality for the existing RE5 via a downloadable patch, or possibly an inexpensive "add-on" from the PSN Store? Having to buy another copy of the whole game would suck for anyone who bought RE5 on the PS3 but wanted to expand their experience to include the motion controller.

Games like RE5 don't need motion control. period. Bowling, sports games, or games made specifically for motion control are fine, but for most games I like sitting on my couch with my controller in hand for hours on end. Call me lazy, but I have yet to play a motion control game that I didn't get sick of waving my arms about for more than 20minute intervals. I would hate to see the move to motion control being the standard, especially in games where it would just be gratutious and take away from the player's experience.

I know marketing guys are looking at the success of the Wii and want a piece of that pie, but they need to look at Wii's sell-in rate, the motion control games that actually sell, and the ones that flopped compared to traditionally controlled games for a different picture.

Oh man I just got a sinking feeling, looking at that picture...
That big thing in the center better be a D pad though from the looks of it, it's not. No analogue stick, and no D-pad? If this is true, my excitement for this device was just murdered.

Resident Evil 4 Wii edition /says hello.
On the other hand don't worry. Motion controls won't become the NEW standard.
They have/will become the second standard!

I have to agree with Kouga here, as RE4: Wii Edition was just fantastic with IR pointer for aiming. But after seeing how RE5 would be controled with the Sony wand I think it'll end up being a disaster.

@Tom: you certainly have never played RE4 on the Wii, or if you did, you found a way to do it in the more difficult way. RE4 on the Wii was much more pleasant to play than either the original version or RE5. So there are lots of games that can benefit from it, and RE5 is one of them.

I'm looking forward to a new Ape Escape! I had a lot of fun with the first two. A goofy and creative series.

Also, Resident Evil 4 on Wii is the way third person shooters are meant to be played.

@Tom: having owned a wii since it came out, i dont recall ever having to wave my arm to play games like zelda or res evil 4. its a simple flick of the wrist, surely you cant be that lazy.

@ Fábio,

I loved RE4 Wii, it really changed my entire perspective of the series.

I don't know if you're a PC guy, but RE5 PC has true mouse support, it's not tacked on like some console-to-PC games. There are two options for aiming, one that's similar to a standard look where you shoot, the other is just like RE4 Wii's setup, but the keyboard to pan/look instead of the nun-chuck.

Anyways, it's a great game on the PC with much improved controls.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

How is Sony going to handle movement in RE5?

And Tom, who plays the Wii like a spaz? :)

Social networking will change immensely! A dancing game would be cool. That way you could go to a virtual club and dance with someones virtual character...but in reality your all alone in your house, dancing by yourself....It would still be neat. Or a virtual rave where you could control glow sticks and such. I'm sure Microsoft will get on that type of thing with Project Natal....

Hmm can you point at the screen with this thing? I really like playing FPS games(like Metroid) on the Wii. That would be sweet for games like Fallout etc

To be honest right now I'm not sold. I hope this isn't another me too idea and Sony really puts some teeth into this thing or it's going to be a waste of time and money. First they need to get it into the hands of gamers and I don't relish being a Guinea pig. For me to bite on this I'm going to need a consumer friendly priced bundle that gives me everything needed to really showcase the controller. It doesn't have to be ground breaking stuff but something that shows me that it's worth investing more in. People are real frugal in this economy so Sony really needs to swing for the fences right out of the gate or this could end badly.

Yes you can! Jump to 3:22 to see how a FPS could possibly be played:
