The Steam Controller will be hitting shelves in less than a month, but, according to Valve's Erik Johnson, the controller you pick up on November 10 won't be the final design.

In fact, there might never be a 'definitive' version of the controller, with Johnson explaining that the long-term goal is to let players design and mod their own controllers.

"We want to release the CAD files for how these controllers are put together," he said. "How do you mod the controller? What does that look like?" said Johnson, speaking to Polygon. "It's in our DNA to think of how our customers can create value for other customers."

Naturally, there will come a time when Valve needs to take back the reins and update the controller itself, although Johnson says the company will only do so when "there's a product or some technology that passes the test of us needing to [release a new controller] so that our customers can experience something [new]."
