Branded as gambling, daily fantasy eSports site shutters in Nevada

October 19, 2015 | By Alex Wawro

Fantasy eSports provider Vulcun has shuttered its operations in the state of Nevada and barred all state residents from playing in its paid fantasy leagues for eSports like Dota 2 and Rocket League due to Nevada regulators' recent decision to classify the act of playing daily fantasy sports as gambling.

It's interesting to note that Vulcun, which has been accepting and awarding money as a dedicated fantasy eSports site for years, is caught in the fallout from the state of Nevada's months-long investigation into more broadly-focused daily fantasy sports companies like FanDuel and DraftKings.

These companies are focused on traditional sports, and only late last month added eSports to their respective rosters of daily fantasy games.

That decision showcased the perceived appeal of eSports, but now it has also ensured that the practice of wagering money on fantasy eSports games will be regulated in Nevada as closely as actual sports betting.
