DICE Sticking With Dedicated Servers For Bad Company 2

Acknowledging "a lot of buzz" around news that Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 for PC would not support dedicated servers, developer EA DICE is declaring that it will stay with dedicated servers for Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

"Since Battlefield 1942 DICE has used dedicated servers for all platforms," said the developer on Bad Company 2's official site. "This formula has worked well, and still works well, for us and for the gaming community. We have stayed true to this practice and will continue this tradition into the upcoming title Battlefield Bad Company 2."

For Modern Warfare 2, Activision-owned Infinity Ward is building a console-like multiplayer backend called IWNet, a decision that has many PC gamers in an uproar.

"Other games use player-hosted or 'peer to peer' solutions, often resulting in a 'host with the most' situation; where the player hosting the match has an advantage over other players connected to their game," says DICE, explaining the benefits of dedicated servers.

"Everyone else is dependent on the host's internet connection and if they don't have a great connection neither will you regardless how great of an internet you have."

"Also, unless server migration is implemented the game ends when that hosting player quits the game forcing you to find another player-host or start your own," the developer adds.

"With dedicated servers everyone gets non-stop action with no connection penalties based on some other player and their internet. This makes dedicated servers the best solution for online PC gaming hands down!"

Good to hear DICE still understands what PC gaming is all about, lag free fragging.

Dedicated Server != Player Run Servers
I don't see how this is any better for the hardcore PC gaming community.

Of course it is player run servers. Unless they want to run >3000 servers http://www.game-monitor.com/search.php?=undefined&vars=&game=bf2 or maybe even >13000 if we are talking COD4 popularity http://www.game-monitor.com/search.php?=undefined&vars=&game=cod4

Quote: "Will there be an option to have my own dedicated server? Yes, DICE will have trusted partners with datacenters worldwide that you'll be able to rent a dedicated server from ensuring you always have a quality server in your region."

Sounds to me that you can't just set up a server anywhere, you need _rent_ (for $$$) one from their "trusted partners". They also say nothing about LAN play, which in my point of view is the greatest loss in the "no more dedicated servers" movement.

yeah I looked at that like almost 4000 servers with a total of 15000 people playing. that is less than 5 people per server. Yeah that is soo much more efficient!. The fact of it is more like there are about maybe 500 server that actually have a decent ping with a decent crowd on them at any one time.

COD4 Multiplayer matchmaking was way better than on PC. most people just want to jump in play a little no spend 15 minutes finding a server that they like.

I would have been shocked if competitors didn't take advantage of ActiBliz/Infinity Ward's blunder. EA/DICE know the score and they're going to get all the marketshare they can while the gettin's good.

I guess we will see then as I am interested in seeing if dev centric MP development can gain a foothold.

And personally, I favor ACT-ARDS. ACTivision - blizzARD. Consider this japanese vengence for SQEENIX!

I cannot believe IW/ATVI missed this glaringly obvious extra revenue stream! Partnering with GSPs and taking a cut of their subscriptions is far better a solution that IWNet for all involved: Dev/Pub, GSPs and Players. Win-Win-Win situation.

IW are thinking about developing down to the LCD while DICE are looking at developing UP to the HCD. Keeping a level playing field without denying features that everyone on a particular platform is used to? Sounds like a solid plan...
