Nintendo: More Than 1 Million DS/DSi, 1/2 Million Wii Units Sold Over Thanksgiving

Nintendo says American consumers bought more than 1 million units of its Nintendo DS and DSi portable consoles during the week of the Thanksgiving holiday, along with more than half a million Wii consoles.

The company's sales numbers apply to the period from Sunday, November 22 to Saturday, November 28, which encompasses the legendary post-Thanksgiving shopping day "Black Friday." The figures come from Nintendo's own "internal tracking numbers" rather than an outside firm such as NPD.

Sales breakdowns by DS model were not given. Nintendo says the systems' performance eclipses the previous Thanksgiving week for portable console sales, set by its own Game Boy Advance in 2002. That year, sales of that system were also reported in the neighborhood of one million for the Thanksgiving week period.

Wii sales for the week exceeded 550,000, with Nintendo says reflects positively on the system's price drop to $199.99. "Holiday shoppers are finding value in our products' prices, and through a gameplay experience that is unique to Nintendo," said Nintendo sales and marketing VP Cammie Dunaway.

As is customary for the house of Mario, the company diligently included per-minute sales averages for its systems in an official statement. It pointed out that 150 Nintendo systems were sold every minute of the week -- "or more than 2.5 every second," it added.

{http://dailynintendo.com/nintendo-reveals-wii-sales-for-black-friday}
2009 Black Friday week Wii sales = 550,000
Fall in Black Friday week sales from 2008 to 2009 = 250,000
Percentage fall in sales from 2008 to 2009 (despite a $50 price cut) = 31%

Chris,

I wonder if you saw my response to RE:Opinion: Looking For Meaning In Games. I didn't know how to contact you otherwise. Sorry, for being off-topic. Tell me what you think.

Wii numbers took a big dip from Black Friday last year.

Pretty consistent with Wii being down from 2008 overall. I guess Nintendo can find solace in that it's still outselling the competition.

Went to Best Buy on Black Friday. The pile for Wiis was high and wide with nobody grabbing any.

The PS3 piles, one was console only, the other a bundle, was MUCH smaller.

Wii still outsell its competitors despite the recession and a PS3 renewal. Nintendo should pat themselves on the back in this lackluster year they have had as far as games titles are concerned.

I just wish the lightening deals on Amazon for Wii games lasted longer. GH5 went up on every platform, the Wii one sold out in minutes, hours later it was still available for the X360 + PS3. I found that par for the course with Wii game deals selling out in minutes leaving the other deals to taunt me. Maybe it's just Amazon, but getting Wii game deals I found to be pretty difficult.

I also saw the PS3 selling really well on Black Friday. It was usually packed with extra games, I was surprised more retailers weren't giving away games with a new Wii purchase (some were). I guess they are expected they'll sell the Wii systems over the next few weeks without the extra game?

Anyway, I'm not sure what the point of the console bias and fighting is on a gaming development website, but from a personal standpoint it was frustrating to be competing with so many people for Wii software deals over the last week.
