A study conducted by research-based consulting firm, Frank N. Magid Associates, has found that virtual reality technology has garnered the attention of the majority of U.S. consumers.

The study, a nationally representative online survey of 2,400 consumers aged 8-64, found that 56 percent of respondents who play any type of game have heard of virtual reality, with 47 percent of those people adding that they're either "interested" or "very interested" in VR tech.

Although over half of those participants are aware of VR, only 25 percent of them are aware of any particular product or brand.

The Oculus Rift has gained the most ground with consumers, with 25 percent of those surveyed having heard of the Rift, while 21 percent and 20 percent of those asked were also able to name-drop Samsung's Gear VR and Sony's PlayStation VR headsets.

When asked how they'd prefer to use virtual reality tech, the majority of participants explained they're keen to use the technology to watch TV shows and movies.

Console and PC gaming was the second most sought after form of virtual reality entertainment, followed by music videos, travel, and sports. Many participants also expressed an interest in using the tech as a means to interact with social media.
