SingStar Franchise Hits 20 Million Units
Sony's SingStar karaoke franchise has reached 20 million units since the first installment launched on PlayStation 2 in 2004, the company has announced.
The company revealed the milestone as it unveiled the latest PlayStation 3-specific update for the game, which patches user bugs and adds several new features designed to make it easier for users to browse and purchase songs for the game on the iTunes-like SingStore.
Although the PlayStation Network already provides a marketplace for downloadable content, SCEE London felt it was important for the game to have its own built-in marketplace. SingStar continues to receive regular update roll-outs.
To date, over 70 SingStar SKUs have been produced in the PAL territories across PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, with recent franchise entries including Singstar Abba and Singstar Queen.
The diversity of individual discs -- often localized for specific regions with songs popular in that country -- made it ideal to have the update-able common online interface.
