Best of GameSetWatch: From Classic Dungeon to Raptor Safari 64

[Gamasutra highlights a week's worth of alternative video gaming news, media, and other curiosities from sister blog GameSetWatch, as written by editor Eric Caoili.]

This round-up offers a fascinating examination of Montezano's Quest, an SNES game that never existed outside of a Full House episode; a preview of Superbrothers: Swords & Sworcery EP, a collaboration between Toronto indies Superbrothers, Jim Guthrie, and Capybara Games; and mock-ups of NES adaptations for '80s/'90s sitcoms, part of an upcoming chiptune cover album from 8-Bit Jesus artist Doctor Octoroc.

Other highlights includes a first look at Classic Dungeon, Nippon Ichi Software's 3D Dot Game Heroes-esque action RPG for PSP; and footage from Raptor Safari 64, Flashbang/Blurst's sequel for PC indie gem Off-Road Velociraptor Safari (pictured).

This past week's top stories:

- Classic Dungeon: 2D Dot Game Heroes
"Continuing the trend of producing new RPGs with old school graphics, music, and tropes, Disgaea house Nippon Ichi Software announced Classic Dungeon for the PSP, releasing in Japan on February 18th. Like From Software/Silicon Studio's 3D Dot Game Heroes, it's an action RPG, and it even has a logo and a character creation tool that looks directly inspired by the PS3 game."

- Production Begins On Off-Road Velociraptor Safari
"Indie developer Flashhbang announced it's started development on a successor to Off-Road Velociraptor Safari, a much bigger project than its previous Blurst portal games developed in 8-week cycles like Time Donkey. Internally referred to as Raptor Safari 64, the game's expected to release in fall 2010 for around $15 to $20."

- Gaijin, Robotube Collaborate For Blip Fest-inspired Game
"Bit.Trip series developer Gaijin Games, which is sponsoring NYC's upcoming three-day Blip Festival 2009, announced a collaboration with Robotube Games (Bloktonik, Zyrx) to create a video game inspired by the three-day chiptune event."

- Superbrothers: Swords & Sworcery Unveiled
"After teasing their collaboration for several weeks now, developer Capybara Games (Critter Crunch, Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes), singer-songwriter Jim Guthrie, and pixelartist/animator Craig "Superbrothers" Adams (Alpinist) posted this teaser video for their project, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, and no surprise, it looks/sounds amazing."

- After These Messages: TV Show Title Screens
"Doctor Octoroc is now teasing his next release, After These Messages, an album filled with 30 chip music covers of television show themes from '80s/'90s sitcoms, cartoons, series. The themes confirmed so far for the CD include Airwolf, Cheers, Fresh Prince, Diff'rent Strokes, Gummi Bears, Heathcliff (!), Law & Order, Night Court, Thundercats, and Tales From The Crypt."

- Exploring The Halls Of General Computer Corp.
"The gallery includes images of not only the General Computer Corp.'s games and staff, but also shots of the company's fire pole meetings (the pole connected two floors and enabled employees to 'move quickly downstairs'), holiday parties, server rooms, factories, arcade/research lab, and even convention visits to expos like CES and MacWorld."

- Puzzle Quest 2 Releases For DS, XBLA Next Spring
"Three years after first appearing on Nintendo DS and PSP, puzzle/RPG hybrid game Puzzle Quest will see a sequel for DS and Xbox Live Arcade next Spring, courtesy of D3 Publisher."

- Full House Plays Through The Never Released Montezano's Quest
"TV programs make up video games all the time for the sake of fitting them into whatever plot they have planned, but this Full House episode goes into a surprising amount of detail on this SNES title's design. While you never actually see the game itself, the Tanner family narrates their progress as they solve puzzles and defeat different enemies."
