Nintendo's DS has passed 10 million units sold to date in the UK, making it the top console ever in the region -- a title previously held by Sony's PlayStation 2.
UK trade site MCV points to Gfk-ChartTrack data showing that the DS, which launched in the UK in March 2005, reached its major milestone in the 47th week of this year, with the holiday season still ahead.
The DS hit 10 million in four years and eight months, while the PS2 reached the same point after nine years on the market. According to the report, the handheld -- which contains the DS, DS Lite and DSi models -- has sold at a rate of over 5,700 consoles per day in the UK, where nearly one in six people own one.
At the beginning of December, data showed that Nintendo's Wii had also reached a UK milestone, topping 6 million units sold in the region since its launch, despite the fact that sales have slowed somewhat year over year.
