Japanese Software: Modern Warfare 2 For PS3 Breaks Top 10

Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. Wii easily led Japanese software sales for a second consecutive week, but the Western-developed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was able to capture a respectable spot in the region's top 10.

Tracking firm said that for the week ended December 13, Infinity Ward-developed Modern Warfare 2 sold 93,000 units on Sony's PlayStation 3 in its Japanese debut week. It's a feat for such a Western-styled game to do so relatively well in Japan, and shows the kind of worldwide reach that the military shooter series. Media Create did not report sales of the Xbox 360 version of Modern Warfare 2.

Modern Warfare 2 launched in the U.S. on November 10 and has been topping charts there and in the UK since release. Activision, which owns Infinity Ward and publishes the game (though Square Enix distributes title in Japan), said a week after launch that the game grossed $550 million in its opening five days.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii, however, was the top-selling game for its second week of availability, selling 431,000 units. The game, also available in the U.S., has sold 1.37 million units in Japan in total, according to Media Create

Namco Bandai's new Wii role-playing game Tales of Graces had a strong debut during the week with 143,000 units sold. Namco Bandai's PSP fighting game Naruto Shippuden Narutimate Accel 3 debuted at number five, selling 77,000.

Games that fell off Media Create's top 10 list from last week include Koei's Samurai Warriors 3, Professor Layton and the Flute of Malevolent Destiny, and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed II.

Media Create's Japanese software sales charts for the week ended December 13 are below:

It's interesting how the japanese market first bought CoD4 before going for MW2.

Wow, it nabbed 4th. Not bad at all. It's nice to see there's a market there despite the Eastern preference for portable games.

Famitsu numbers, MW2 week 1 sales:

PS3 Modern Warfare 2 - 117k
360 Modern Warfare 2 - 61k
Total 1st week MW2 sales - 178K

By comparison, COD4 week 1 sales:

[360] Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - 25,901 (LTD 54,752)
[PS3] Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - 20,692 (LTD 113,957)

http://www.japan-gamecharts.com/360.php
http://www.japan-gamecharts.com/ps3.php

So in effect, MW2 has sold more in just one week, than COD4 has sold in it's entire lifetime since it was launched in Japan in 2007.
First week sales of MW2 on the 360 is 3 times what first week sales of COD4 was on the 360.
And first week sales of MW2 on the PS3 is nearly 6 times what first week sales of COD4 was on the PS3.

In addition, MW2 first week sales on the 360 is 50% bigger than GTA IV sales first week sales on the 360. MW2 first week sales on the 360, has already overtaken GTA IV lifetime sales on the 360.
For the PS3, MW2 first week sales are in the same ball park as GTA IV first week sales.
GTA IV first week sales:

[PS3] Grand Theft Auto IV - 122,058 (LTD 211,240)
[360] Grand Theft Auto IV - 38,281 (LTD 59,893)

It would be pretty safe, to predict that MW2 will sell more than GTA IV did on the PS3 and 360 combined in Japan.

** All figures are Famitsu figures.

I wonder how much the publishing deal by Square Enix played into the sales of this game in Japan? IW may want to keep SE as their Japanese publishing partner in the future.

Can you tell us a source for this numbers, I can't find them on the website fo Famitsu and they seem strange, cause they are much higher, then the ones Media Create published.
