The Most Anticipated Games Of 2010: Xbox 360/PlayStation 3

Now that 2009 is officially behind us, the games that were naught but distant promises last year shift onto the concrete horizon. Amid all the holiday celebrations that have just concluded, it might be easy to lose track of all the major launches fans are looking forward to in 2010.

That's why Gamasutra has decided to round up some of the most-anticipated releases in the year to come, from big sequels to promising new IP. We start with the major home consoles, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

This is far from a complete list, of course, and we encourage readers to add their own most-anticipated titles in the comments.

Mass Effect 2 (BioWare, Xbox 360) - January 26
Fans of BioWare's space opera are looking forward to resurrecting Commander Shepherd just as much they anticipate the intriguing promise that Mass Effect 2, in which player choice plays a significant role, will "know" what players did in the first Mass Effect.

Splinter Cell: Conviction (Ubisoft Montreal, Xbox 360) - February 23
The latest in the Splinter Cell series was unveiled with one of the most popular trailers at E3 in 2009, thanks to the intuitive environment-based user interface and brand-new targeting system that many look forward to seeing in practice.

God Of War III (Sony Santa Monica, PS3) - March
One of the most popular PlayStation 3 franchises -- if not the most popular -- gets its third installment soon, bringing Kratos right back into the action in ancient Greece. The team's promised more weapons for the cinematic melee, bigger brawls and a more interactive environment.

Halo: Reach (Bungie, Xbox 360) - Fall
Reach will be developer Bungie's last dance with Microsoft's blockbuster franchise. In this series prequel, players will begin by defending a colony against a Covenant invasion.

BioShock 2 (2K Marin/Australia, Multiplatform) - February 9
The underwater dystopia of Rapture as envisioned in 2007's BioShock earned a permanent place in many gamers' memories. Now with the sequel, they can finally go back -- as a hulking, helmeted Big Daddy in an even further-decayed world overrun with new horrors.

Final Fantasy XIII (Square Enix, Multiplatform) - March 9
Few franchises reliably trigger mammoth fan surges the way Final Fantasy does, and with the thirteenth installment owners of either Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 will be able to play the game for the first time for a series that's been Sony-allied for some years.

Heavy Rain (Quantic Dream, PS3) February 16
Quantic Dream's David Cage, known for Indigo Prophecy, has spoken passionately about what he believes games can be, and Heavy Rain will be the studio's effort to address that desire for a deeper experience. Expectations are high, and many await the results.

Other Notable Xbox 360/PS3 Releases Of 2010 (All are multiplatform unless otherwise noted):

Bayonetta (Platinum Games/Sega, January), Darksiders (Vigil Games/THQ, January), Lost Planet 2 (Capcom, February), Dante's Inferno (Visceral Games/EA, February), Red Dead Redemption (Rockstar San Diego, April), Crysis 2 (Crytek, TBA), Alan Wake (Remedy/MGS, April, Xbox 360), Mafia II (2K Czech, May), Brink (Splash Damage/Bethesda, May).

Wow those first 6 are possible all BUYS for me on opening day releases. ME2, GoW3, and FF13 have already been preordered!

I'm hearing positive things about Dante.

Dantes Inferno is just a hype machine. The demo was pretty sad.

Marco Devarez

Opposite case for me... while it is a hype machine the demo showed it could be fun... will i buy it? probably not, but the demo was a positive surprise for me.

ModNation Racers. After playing in the Beta, this game shows a lot of potential to be a game I go back to over and over again.

Dante's Inferno played too much like God of War to me. If I'm only able to choose one, I'll go with GoW.

Can't wait for Splinter cell, I want to preorder it. Liked all the other Splinter cell games.

On a list of 360/PS3 games, it seems misleading to have Mass Effect 2 and SC:Conviction listed as multiplatform. There may be PC releases for them both, but in terms of consoles, they're 360-only.

Good point, Sam, we edited, we think your way is a little clearer.

If I had to make a choice between God of War 3, Dante's Inferno, and affording lunch for a few months, somebody notify Sally Struthers to bring me a sandwich every now and then.

Red Dead Redemption would replace Final Fantasy XVIIIC for most anticipated sequel coming in 2010. Final Fantasy has lost me with its combat and story line in the recent editions. Lots of good buzz on Brink from people who have seen it. I hope Halo:Retch's release date won't push other games back like MW2 did... as it is a non-event to me and my friends.

Heavy Rain is up there on my list. I'm surprised nobody mentioned The Last Guardian, didn't it have a confirmed 2010 release?

Chuck Kallenbach

So very many sequels. Sigh.

Rob Bergstrom

The Last Guardian, please. I want them to have the time to make it into whatever they envision, but I also want it right now.

My X360 buying list is: Splinter Cell, Alan Wake, Red Dead Redemption, Bayonetta, Dante's Inferno.
Bioshock 2 and Brink only if they come for PC, or Microsoft lauches a thumb trackball controller (In this case I stop buying AAA PC games)

Chuck Kallenback makes a very good point about so many sequels. There are new directions that games can expand into - if you can find my most recent blog post at Gamasutra you'll find that new, and exciting time travel elements for new kinds of adventure games are awaiting licensing offers today. Or you can visit www.r2f2.com to see the video that lays out the potential.

Last Guardian and 3D Dot Game Heroes!

Final Fantasy Online, I am looking to see what Square does to attract new subscribers while still keeping the current players involved in the new product. The release date for this year could be interesting.

I think that sequels, by nature, may gain more anticipation because we've experienced firsthand the gameplay and long for more. On the other hand, new IPs should have lots of anticipation because we also want new experiences and sequels have a tendency toward diminishing results.

Case in point may be Bioshock2, which may have a tough time recreating the uniqueness of the first game. Heavy Rain is something I look forward to because of it's new take on gameplay and story but I worry as well that it will be a series of Quick Time Events that aren't engaging.

I think it says a lot about ourselves whether we anticipate a sequel or a new title (or a bit of both) in 2010.

Bioshock 2 and Bayonetta!

No Battlefield: Bad Company 2? Its the only game out of this list I'm looking forward to...

Chris Sykora

This is a good list but I am surprised Heavy Rain is up there and a game like Alan Wake is in the notable section. All of these games have multiple titles under their belt and proven track records. Heavy Rain... not so much.

When I heard about the new Medal of Honor I groaned internally-great, just what we need, more games about shooting people in Afghanastan/Iraq/Etc. Then I saw that trailer and I was blown away. If the final product is anything like that this is a game I will buy day one. Otherwise, all the games on the list look great, as do the notable games (with the exception of Dante's Inferno which did not impress me at all).

2010 is going to be a monster year!

Lots of sequels to 'quality' games (judging by this list and some of the omissions that I'm looking forward to: Dead Rising 2, Crackdown 2, and Fable 3). It's not all sequels/spinoffs, though, as some of the new IP titles look great as well (picking up Bayonetta today, I can't wait for Alan Wake, Brink looks amazing, and Heavy Rain looks interesting).

It might be better to have this article only talk about the games that are supposed to release before E3... As I'm sure we won't have a good idea of what is being released this holiday until after E3. [other than Halo: Reach, a new Call of Duty, and a new Madden] Especially considering that Project Natal and Playstation Motion Controllers are supposed to release at some point.

"We start with the major home consoles, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3."

Perhaps they're the primary development platforms for a sizable percentage of the Gamasutra community... but numerically speaking in terms of both hardware and software, are they the only "major consoles"?

Chris or Leigh, please elaborate on why the sentence isn't simply "We start with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3."

GT5. Come'on.

Does Gran Turismo 5 not get a mention? Thats the one I'm waiting for!

Thomas Grove

Bayonetta, Sin and Punishment 2, Metroid Other M, Last Guardian, GoW III, maybe Lost Planet 2, SFIV CE, hmm, GT5... I probably don't have enough time to play that one properly but if I can get the office to buy a copy I'll certainly play some of the rally tracks.

C'mon everyone say it with me... Custer's Revenge 2: The Revenge of Custer's Revenge!

Christoph Binder

I think Dark Void from Capcom should also be on the list, i guess it may become an excellent game... i like the gameplay concepts sofar...
also: Gran Turismo 5

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm should ship in 2010, and will probably outsell every game on this list, combined.

Here's one looking forward to Dante's Inferno & Bayonetta! And Starcraft II if I had a better computer.
I'm a huge fan of the Legacy Of Kain series, so the first 2 aren't such a great surprise.

Still waiting for Ganster of War, then we have 3 GOW titles and nobody will know which one the other is talking about :)
