Nintendo: Wii December Sales Rise Year-On-Year To 3 Million In U.S.

The Wii had a "healthy" holiday in the U.S., Nintendo said Tuesday, as estimated sales of the motion-controlled console exceeded 3 million units in the U.S. during December.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recently made the sales announcement in Japan. The estimates put December 2009 Wii sales above those of December 2008, which saw U.S. sales of 2.15 million units.

The sales boost come after a price cut in fall 2009 that brought the Wii to $199, down from $249, a price that the console clung to since its late 2006 launch. Wii supply was also stronger compared to the 2008 holiday season.

Consumers were also picking up copies of the side-scrolling throwback New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Nintendo estimated that U.S. life-to-date sales of the game, launched November 15, are closing in on 4 million units.

Nintendo added that its handheld DS console line, including the DS Lite and DSi, "set a new all-time calendar-year U.S. sales record for any console or hand-held system" in 2009. While Nintendo did not offer specific figures, U.S. sales of the DS were around 9.9 million units in 2008.

Tracking firm NPD Group is expected to release the full roster of U.S. video game sales figures on January 14.

So far, NDS sold 7,875,400 units in USA. The previous all time record was Wii last year with 10,151,000 units. That would mean at least 2.3m units. Of course, it all depends on whether NPD figures agree with Nintendo ones, but it would be an extremely strong 6th holiday season.

Conspiracy time: May Nintendo be trying to force NPD into reaching that amount?

So worldwide New Super Mario Bros is at 9m. Wow.

Strange: I thought I read many predictions by analysts and industry experts saying the Wii was losing ground...

When I read somewhere that Iwata expected NSMB Wii, Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus to reach 10 million each by the end of the fiscal season, I didn't actually believe him.

Looking at these figures, it looks like they will make it. Crazy how well they are working such strong numbers with only the minimum effort of development.

Paging Mr. Kevin Jones, Mr. Jones? Where are you? Do you still believe that NSMB Wii can't outsell COD? Where are you? You had so much to say last month. Hello? Hello?

He's probably too busy playing "Just Dance" on his "little sister's" Wii.

@Uylosa

After playing Wiif Fit and Wii Sports, I have a hard time believing that you are serious when you say they were developed with minimal effort.

Those games took just as much development if not more than most games.

I guess if a game can last more than 6 hour, but not have the glits and glamor of HD graphics, then the development time must have been minimal. :roll:

"Minimal effort of development"? I really don't think so. Not even near...

@Luis, Anwar's comment was sarcastic, don't mix him with Uyiosa's comment ;-)
