Gamasutra Expert Blogs: From Gamers' Rights To Faith-Based Games

In our weekly Best of Expert Blogs column, we showcase notable pieces of writing from members of the game development community who maintain Expert Blogs on Gamasutra.

Member Blogs -- also highlighted weekly -- can be maintained by any registered Gamasutra user, while the invitation-only Expert Blogs are written by development professionals with a wealth of experience to share.

We hope that both sections can provide useful and interesting viewpoints on our industry. For more information about the blogs, check out the official posting guidelines.

In this latest round-up, industry notables write about meddling producers, a disabled gamer who lost a suit against Sony, and indie problems.

Here are the top blogs for the week:

This Week's Standout Expert Blogs

- Will You Create a World of Consumers or Contributors?
(Reid Kimball)

Reid Kimball reviews Jesse Schell's fascinating and well-received talk at last week's DICE Summit in Las Vegas. Kimball thinks that game developers have a very important decision to make...

- Needs More Cowbell: Why Publishing Producers Sometimes Dictate Design
(Timothy Ryan)

- Games, Disability and Anti-Discrimination Laws

- Message and Merriment
(Steve Mallory)

Steve Mallory takes a look at Christian and faith-based games, and asks why the adherence to religious source material often leads to a game that's just not any good.

- Finding Indie Game Developers
(Alistair Doulin)

Alistair Doulin sees a problem with the indie game development community. He says they have "trouble finding other like-minded indie developers to work with." Here, he explains the problem further and outlines the cause and solution.

I would like to create a game that doesn't beat the gamer over the head with being overtly religious. I believe that a Christian game, or any other religion if you really think about it, can be made without being campy.

For instance, I remember seeing Assasin's Creed cinematics and thought that Jesus and His handing out of bread and fish would be really neat to see like that. Or possibly like Half-Life 2 in that you are not removed from the character, and you would witness these things from a first person perspective.

Just my two cents :).

Great. Now make a fun game out of that.

I could see making a game like Heavy Rain where you follow Jesus around while trying to handle everyday issues (e.g. feeding your family, avoiding run ins with the authorities, getting medicine to the sick).

Succeeding in a task would be 'rewarded' by a Jesus cut-screen.

The story of Moses or David could make a good game

. The Moses game could be strategy based about leading the people too the promise land. You would have to conquer land by winning wars or converting your enemies. As well as manage your resources to keep your flock faithful.

The story of David can make a nice adventure rpg game where you travel the land on quest from the King. On your way you fight lions, bears, enemy armies, and evil spirits. You gain experience points and increase in rank to one day become the king.
