Square Enix has pulled off another number one debut on the weekly Japanese software sales charts this year with the release of the Nintendo DS role-playing game, Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie, Media-Create reported this week.

The RPG, a DS remake of the 1995 Super Famicom original, sold 906,000 units for the week ended January 31. The game released on January 28.

It's the second time in just a few weeks that Square Enix has been able to top the charts with handheld RPG. The January 9 release Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep for Sony's PSP led the rankings for two weeks in a row following its debut.

Making a strong debut at number two was Sega's tri-Ace-developed RPG Resonance of Fate, which sold 118,000 units on PlayStation 3 and 27,000 on Xbox 360. The game is reportedly confirmed for a U.S. and European release later this year.

MAG, the highly-touted PS3 online shooter from Redmond, WA-based SOCOM developer Zipper Interactive, was able to sneak into the rankings at number 10, an oddball amongst the domestic Japanese video game fare that populated the charts.

Dropping out of the top ten from last week were Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A's Portable: The Battle of Aces from Namco Bandai, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite from Capcom, Wii Sports Resort from Nintendo, and Inazuma Eleven 2: Kyoui no Shinryakusha (Fire/Blizzard) from Level 5.

Below are Media Create's Japanese sales charts for the week ended January 31:

The number 10 all-platform title sold only 19,000 copies. Number five didn't even sell twice that many.

Is Japan really an important market for Western game developers?

Japan was the second biggest market last year. It is dwarfed by the size of the USA market, of course, but then so is Europe.

That says more to me about the Japanese' tolerance for bad games more than anything else.

Japan isn't a particularly important market for any company that isn't Nintendo.
(Square Enix too, I guess)
