DS Hardware Line Tops Japanese Charts

The PSP-3000 captured the individual top spot on Media-Create's weekly Japanese hardware unit sales list, but it was the Nintendo DS and its three different models that were able to edge out Sony's handheld line overall.

For the week ended January 31, the older, UMD-based PSP-3000 sold 47,875, down from 52,909 a week prior. Its newer UMD-less sibling PSP Go dropped in unit sales yet another week to 1,645 from 1,773.

The DSi LL, the larger-screened version of Nintendo's handheld that's also the latest entry into the DS line, landed a third-place spot after the Wii, selling 34,863, up about 10,000 units. The entire DS line combined, including the DSi LL, the DSi, and the DS Lite, sold 66,457, up from combined sales of 49,398 a week ago, possibly thanks to the chart-leading Square Enix DS remake, Dragon Quest VI.

PlayStation 3 sales also rose notably week-on-week to 34,431, up from 26,966. Below are the full sales rankings from Media Create for the week ended January 31, 2009 (the bottom chart lumps together sales of all models in a given line of hardware).
