Rocket League update brings Steam cross-network play

Rocket League update brings Steam cross-network play

May 25, 2016 | By Chris Kerr

Rocket League has become the first Xbox One title to support cross-network play with a Steam PC game.

As promised by developer Psyonix back in March, the game has been updated to allow Xbox One players to take on their PC counterparts.

The cross-network update was rolled out yesterday at 3pm PT and 6pm ET. Anyone who wants to opt out can disable the feature through the in-game options.

"Cross-network play has been something that Xbox One gamers have been asking us for since the day we launched, and thanks to Microsoft’s new cross-network policies, we’re proud to give it to them,” said Psyonix through its blog.

Although Psyonix has bridged the gap between Rocket League players on Xbox and Steam, bringing together consoles owners is a more delicate issue, according to Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida.

"Because PC is an open platform it's much more straightforward," explained the Sony Worldwide Studios boss earlier this year

"Connecting two different closed networks is much more complicated so we have to work with developers and publishers to understand what it is they are trying to accomplish.

"We also have to look at the technical aspect - and the technical aspect could be the easiest. We also have to look at policy issues and business issues as well."
