Gamasutra Member Blogs: From Home To Russia To Bangalore

In highlights from Gamasutra's Member Blogs, our weblog writers examine working at home, attending events in Bangalore, subverting game design in Russia, and complicated programming things.

Member Blogs can be maintained by any registered Gamasutra user, while invitation-only Expert Blogs -- also highlighted weekly -- are written by selected development professionals.

Our favorite blog post of the week will earn its author a lifetime subscription to Gamasutra's sister publication, Game Developer magazine. (All magazine recipients outside of the United States or Canada will receive lifetime electronic subscriptions.)

We hope that our blog sections can provide useful and interesting viewpoints on our industry. For more information, check out the official posting guidelines.

Here are the top member blogs for the week:

This Week's Standout Member Blogs

- Tips for working at home
(Randell Trulson)

As someone who worked from home full-time for three years prior to my employment at this fine publication, I fully endorse Randell Trulson's list of tips. In particular, I would emphasize his final suggestion, "mix up your location" -- working from external locations like coffee shops can really help if you find yourself getting a bit too comfortable at home.

For his effort, Randell will receive a lifetime subscription to Gamasutra sister publication Game Developer magazine.

- In Russia, Game Plays You: How Pathologic Proves All The Game Design Rules Wrong
(Xander Markham)

Don't be fooled. "In Soviet Russia" jokes may continue to be hilarious year after year, but Ice-Pick Lodge's Pathologic is absolutely not. For more information on this matter, please consult Xander Markham's blog post.

- Embedded? No Exceptions!
(Joe Woynillowicz)

My genuine comprehension of in-depth programming posts tends to be extremely low -- and to that rule there are "no exceptions"!!! Ha ha! Seriously though if you are interested in mobile game programming you should consider taking a look at this.

- Flashback: Why 2D Games Should Be Revisited On Next Gen Hardware
(Amir Sharar)

I've always found it a shame that right as game technology hit the point where high-resolution 2D artwork was becoming possible, 3D took over in a big way and largely buried further evolution in the 2D arena. Various modern distribution and development opportunities have led to the beginnings of a 2D renaissance however, and Amir Sharar has more than a few things to say about that.

- The Bangalore Game Developer's Summit - A newbie's perspective
(Tejas Oza)

This year saw the launch of the independently-run India Game Developer Summit in Bangalore, and student Tejas Oza was on the scene to check out sessions and the expo floor!
