With Universal developing a film based on Asteroids and Fox considering a Missile Command movie, Warner Bros. is apparently looking to bring a classic arcade game to theatres too.
The film studio is is reportedly negotiating with Taito to secure feature rights for 1978 vertical shooter Space Invaders.
The film studio already has three Hollywood names to attach to the project as producers, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times: Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan), Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity), and Guymon Casady.
Iconic arcade classic Space Invaders is a recognizable brand, but its premise -- destroying 8-bit invading aliens -- is so simple that to say it will need some massaging to create a two-hour film narrative is an understatement.
As with the Asteroids and Missile Command films, it seems likely that virtually any Hollywood blockbuster featuring loose science fiction trappings, ships and explosions could be assigned the Space Invaders brand name.

How does anyone think that these games will translate into a movie? At least pick a video game where the main character has a name, or dialog, or something resembling a plot...
You want to make a period film set in the 1980s where a guy is playing a quintessential piece of memorabilia known as Space Invaders? Gotta pay the fee.
The only IP transaction game developers understand is "sell unit, make money". That's linear thinking. They don't realize there are many ways to make money from an IP, and many platforms and medium to translate the IP across, and many years to do it in. It's like real estate. For example, how many of you concern yourself with the film rights to the games you are designing?
And what if they give the Rock the main role and call him Cannon and instead of saying words, he is always making humming noises, that become faster and faster, like the Space Invaders march, if he gets upset? ;-)
