New 'British Inspiration Awards' Will Include Video Games

UK politicians announced cross-party support for the UK government's new "British Inspiration Awards," which will include categories for varying creative cultural sectors, including video games.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown MP, Conservative Leader David Cameron MP and Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg MP jointly announced the new awards on Tuesday. The inaugural BIAs will take place Friday, April 23 this year at The Brewery, Chiswell Street, London EC1.

"I am enormously proud of the talented people in this country who, through their creative and entrepreneurial gifts, illuminate their lives and enrich ours," said Brown in a statement. "And the British Inspiration Awards is a great way of both recognizing their endeavors and celebrating our achievements as a nation."

Cameron added, "British design and creativity has led the world for many years, and we should be proud of that heritage. I welcome the opportunity this event brings to celebrate our many creative successes."

Categories for the BIAs include interactive entertainment, film, TV, music, fashion, arts, design, science and technology, innovation, enterprise and industry and special recognition. The awards aim to foster the UK's creative sectors, and recognize the country's "economic, social and artistic development through creative endeavor."

David Yarnton, general manager at Nintendo UK, is leading the BIAs' executive board. The awards are also associated with Games Aid, a UK-based video game charity. More information is available at the BIA's official website.
