3DS Pokemon sales surge thanks to success of Pokemon Go

August 19, 2016 | By Chris Kerr

Sales of core 3DS Pokemon titles have been buoyed by the recent success of mobile entry, Pokemon Go

Responding to the NPD's latest sales figures for July, which saw the 3DS reign supreme on both the software and hardware charts, Nintendo revealed its ageing Pokemon line-up was given a new lease of life last month.

For July, year-over-year sales of Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, which launched in November 2014, grew by 80 percent, while sales of 2013 releases Pokemon X and Y were almost 200 percent higher than a year ago.

Nintendo suspects the upswing can be attributed, in part, to the recent Nintendo 2DS price drop, but added that "widespread positive public reception for the Pokemon Go mobile app has renewed interest in core Pokemon games on Nintendo systems."

Since launching earlier this year Pokemon Go has topped download charts and helped break stock market records.

However, the game has also seen its fair share of controversy, running afoul of disgruntled homeowners tired of trespassing trainers, and worrying some players by inadvertently asking for access to highly personal information upon launch.
