Ubisoft seems to be culling its online free-to-play game portfolio this week, announcing that both The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot and Ghost Recon Phantoms (née Ghost Recon Online) will be shutting down this year.
The latter's demise is especially notable because Ghost Recon Phantoms (pictured) was Ubisoft's first foray into F2P online shooter design, and the game itself had a decent run -- by the time it shuts down on December 1st, it will have been operating in some form for over four years.
However, according to a company FAQ Ubisoft is shuttering Phantoms because it "was not as successful as we had hoped for....in the end we decided to close the game and focus on other projects." The exact same (word for word) reason was given for closing Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, which has been operating since 2013 and will run through October.
Ubisoft isn't alone on this, either -- Microsoft apparently cancelled its own F2P online shooter venture, Halo Online, earlier this week.
