ModDB pulls GameFront back from the brink

ModDB pulls GameFront back from the brink

August 30, 2016 | By Chris Kerr

Mod database and sharing site GameFront has been saved thanks to a late intervention from fellow mod haven, ModDB.

GameFront folded in April this year, almost two decades after launching under the guise of FileLeech.

Since then, the game file distribution hub has taken on a number of monikers, and was perhaps best known to the wider games industry as FileFront.

After dancing with death for the better part of a decade -- during which time it was saved on multiple occasions -- it was eventually shuttered by Defy Media earlier this year along with GameTrailers

Once again, however, a revival is on the cards, with ModDB explaining in a blog post that it couldn't sit by and watch as GameFront "slowly fade into obscurity."

"Choice, openness and preserving history are ideologies we value greatly at ModDB and IndieDB," reads the post. "So we began talking to Defy Media, the former owner of and, and reached an agreement to acquire these domains."

Now it's acquired those domains, ModDB plans to revitalise the brand by designing a site that strikes a balance between the old and the new, with a focus on accessibility and usability.

Beyond that, the company says its down to users to prove there's still a demand for an unrestrictive content creation and sharing hub by helping them rebuild the archive and restore GameFront to its former glory.
