Report: Games Comprise Over One-Third of iPad Apps

Mobile application analytics company Distimo (via Tech Crunch) reports that over one-third of all iPad applications released in the device's launch week are in the App Store's "Games" category.

Of the 2,385 iPad-exclusive applications released as of April 6th, 833 titles (35 percent) are games. The App Store's second-largest iPad application category, "Entertainment," includes 260 apps (11 percent).

In addition, the App Store's "Games" section features more top-selling iPad apps than any other category. Over 30 percent of the iPad's most-downloaded applications are games. "Entertainment" is the next most popular category, hosting nearly ten percent of the iPad's biggest-selling apps.

Both categories are even more popular among iPhone and iPod Touch users. The "Games" section includes more than 60 percent of the most-downloaded iPhone and iPod Touch apps, with "Entertainment" accounting for nearly 15 percent of all top downloads.

Distimo's report also finds that the average iPad app price is $3.61, compared to $3.55 for applications released for the iPhone and iPod Touch. 83 percent of current iPad applications are paid downloads, while 73 percent of iPhone and iPod Touch downloads are paid apps.

The way I see it, the iPad wont' be an e-reader as Apple expected, but a portable game console.

The nice thing about the iPad is that it can be different things to different people. Very multi-purpose while not being designed for any one single purpose (i.e. Sony PSP or Nintendo DS). While games are quite impressive on the iPad, the other non-game types of applications are also top notch. Because of this diversity, the iPad will sell very well. Will that install base translate into a fertile game purchasing bunch? Well, only time will tell - so far, the answer is a resounding YES!
