Freshly-departed Failbetter cofounder has a new game: Cultist Simulator

October 4, 2016 | By Alex Wawro

Back in May, Failbetter Games cofounder Alexis Kennedy announced he was leaving the studio after 7 years to "learn as much as I can from as many different kinds of project as I can."

Notably, one of those projects now appears to be another indie game development venture, as Kennedy has this week laid plans to develop and release a version of Cultist Simulator, the single-player digital board game he's been prototyping for some time.

"I spent my first month out of Failbetter building an alpha Javascript prototype of an experimental game, Cultist Simulator, to test out some mechanics and lore," writes Kennedy. "My eerily insightful playtesters identified a lot of things that worked and a lot that could work better. I took some time away to do freelance work (and eat herring in Iceland) and now I’ve settled on my next steps."

While this isn't unprecendented (Kennedy cofounded Failbetter because at some point in 2009 he set out to design the game that became Echo Bazaar, which became Fallen London), it is intriguing given that he's also been pursuing other game dev projects since leaving the company, most notably serving as BioWare's first-ever guest writer.

In his blog post, Kennedy notes that such work may well get in the way of his hopes to release Cultist Simulator for PC and mobile devices sometime in 2017.
