Microsoft Confirms LG Partnership; 3D 'Will Continue To Evolve'

Microsoft has officially confirmed widespread reports yesterday of a partnership with LG in South Korea to promote 3D televisions alongside Xbox 360 games, pledging to keep pace with the evolution of 3D gaming.

"As we’ve said before, 3D games are available today on Xbox 360 and will continue to evolve," Microsoft's UK PR office told Edge Online. "Today, you can buy a 3DTV and wear glasses to play games like Avatar, and more titles like Batman: Arkham Asylum are on the way."

While 3D is much-discussed across all facets of the entertainment space, there's still some skepticism about what shape 3D entertainment in the home will take -- the scope of the actual demand for 3D is not well-defined, and questions linger like how many consumers will want to wear goggles in their living rooms, for example.

As such, most in the game industry are approaching the 3D space with cautious readiness, if not fervent enthusiasm. Tech companies like Epic and Scaleform are already providing 3D-ready development infrastructures to their licensees, and Sony has made comments indicating its studios are developing games for a 3D-ready PlayStation 3.

Microsoft stresses that the 3D promo partnership is South Korea-specific, but says the joint initiative is "further evidence that as 3D adoption grows, Xbox 360 will support 3D games and entertainment."
