More: Console/PC

Take-Two's made a major marketing push behind Red Dead Redemption, aiming for Grand Theft Auto- like top billing for the Western franchise. And such moves make sense: The company makes record-smashing showings with its Grand Theft Auto franchise, but it can't seem to consistently turn profits in non-GTA years.

And given Take-Two's fairly regular timeline challenges -- the publisher has a reputation for long development cycles and release delays -- building another blockbuster franchise besides GTA would allay investor concerns and serve the company's balance sheet well.

Take-Two's efforts around Red Dead Redemption could pay off, says Cowen group analyst Doug Creutz, who's raised his estimates for the title from 2.2 million to 4.0 million units in its first year based on "very strong pre-order demand."

The title has topped best-seller lists at online retailers for weeks, notes the analyst, which indicates "it is poised for breakout success." However, although it sets up the Red Dead franchise as another core property for Take-Two, Creutz says that based on the big time gaps between iterations of Rockstar franchises, another installment might not appear until the next console cycle.

Rockstar has said it spent more money than ever from its pre-launch TV budget to promote the title, with the aim of creating "a massive triple-A title." It ran its first-ever cinema ad campaign, placing trailers alongside films like Robin Hood, Iron Man 2 and Prince of Persia.

Darn near every gamer in the world who can run it would buy it if it were on the PC too. It's gonna blow the top off of the sales charts, watch.

@John---Yeah. It surprises me that the younger generation is anticipating this game. Just goes to show that your game doesn't have to be Modern Warfare XX to sell gangbusters.

I am so glad we are finally getting a great western game, not like Red Dead Revolver or GUN were bad, but they won't hold a candle to to this.

Wait wait ... Did this analyst take into account the fact that preorders are granting strong ingame bonuses ?

I certainly pre-ordered but didn't know until after the fact that I get some sweet gold guns (um, really?). I'm gonna be busting caps in asses with them. Heck I know nothing about the game but am a sucker for westerns and Bound in Blood pretty much sucked so hoping this will be better.

We are actually buying both the PS3 version and the 360 version. There is huge anticipation by my kids for this game.

Back in the early's '80s as a young teen I used to dream about a free roam cowboy game. 27 years later my dream is about to be fulfilled. This baby will have legs. And it's great to see the young people embracing this genre setting... unless it's all of us old 'wanna be Clint Eastwood' ba$tards responsible for the pre sales haha.

It's amazing how the kool aid changes flavors in such a short period of time. I think this title looks beautiful. I'm also afraid it's in a heavy spin cycle with PR/Analysts/media buys combining their wonder powers. Let's not forget the recent sales history of westerns games and the current trending in NPD #s. Fingers crossed for this to be a hit!

hehe if they're releasing it for the pc platform, which they have previously dropped, then they'll sure make more than that, I'll bet! know why? coz I'll be getting this for my pc for sure haha. this game is epic in a different kind of way to gta4.

i dont know, i just love simulation/virtual worlds/open world sandbox games. its not just about game mechanics and stuff. the thought of riding my horse and exploring the world and soak in the view is on another level of its own. I find myself enjoying more of the sights in gta4 by walking down alleyways and strolling down the beach. And I'll occasionally ram my car into those tai-chi peeps at the beach just for fun haha.
