Sony Announces Killzone 3 , Featuring 3D Mode

Sony has confirmed it will release a third entry in Guerrilla Games' Killzone series, including a stereoscopic 3D rendering option -- but the publisher declined to give a projected release timeframe.

Killzone 3 is in development for PlayStation 3 by Netherlands-based Sony-owned studio Guerrilla Games, which has developed only Killzone titles since 2004. Killzone 2 was released last year to strong critical reception and relatively strong commercial performance, selling at least one million units but falling off the NPD sales charts not long after it hit shelves.

According to rumors that circulated late last year, Killzone 3 was scheduled for a 2010 ship date, but today's announcement made no mention of release plans. Sony is likely to reveal more about the game during next month's E3 Expo in Los Angeles.

An official press release promises "more vehicles, explosive high powered weapons and a vicious close-combat system" to portray a conflict that "is David vs. Goliath...if Goliath had thousands of troops and a thermonuclear arsenal."

Sony also claims Killzone 3 includes "levels ten times bigger than in Killzone 2," across "a host of environments that threaten to bury you on the deadly planet," such as "toxic nuclear wastelands," "a lethal alien jungle," "bitter arctic conditions," and "space."

And, hoping to capitalize on increasing interest in 3D media, the game will have an optional stereoscopic 3D mode that will encourage players to "learn to fear what’s around every single corner."

Eh... I really enjoyed Killzone 2, but they really need to fix some of the overblown language of some of the characters (The hot head black guy that had to use the word f*ck every five seconds), and they need to make some online changes. What I could not get over in my head was the foolishness that the main game introduce at least two vehicles and not one vehicle in the online game. Also concerning 3D... If it requires me to buy some new TV or a pair of expensive glasses I will have to pass on 3D. I am however looking forward to KZ3. As for big levels... I'll wait and see. The RPG game Zenoblade for the Wii has not only said they will have huge free roaming worlds, but they actually showed them. Huge world in a FPS doesn't really impress me unless they are build for vehicles scale much like Halo and MAG are.

The 3D mode sounds cool but I don't know how it will be implemented yet. The problem I have with 3D movies is they don't auto-focus shots (I presume because a 2D version is always required with depth of field effects, lens play, etc...) so when some little Pandoran dandelion seed comes floating past your eyes it's all blurred, or one of Wonderland's flowers blooms in the foreground and you try to focus on it you can't because the camera wants you looking at Johnny Depp. LOOK AT HIM DAMMIT! Plus the glasses darken the screen a lot.

I want this universe to succeed so bad... i thought i read that Naughty Dog is lending a hand with this one, lets see if they really do have that Midas touch.

Is this technically doable with Sonys existing hardware? Don't TV's with 3D processors use a new type of HDMI input to assist in producing the image? Or is this going to be some gimicky emulation?
