Capcom, Namco Confirm Street Fighter X Tekken Crossover

Talking at a Comic-Con panel, Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono has revealed that Capcom's Street Fighter X Tekken is in development for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, mashing up the popular Capcom fighting game with Namco Bandai's long-running series.

The title, which has no confirmed release date, will utilize the same technology that powered popular recent franchise titles Street Fighter IV & Super Street Fighter IV, with Tekken characters like Kazuya Mishima and Nina Williams battling Street Fighter favorites like Ryu and Chun-Li.

According to an official announcement on Capcom.com, the game will feature 2D gameplay as in Street Fighter IV, as well as fully realized 3D character models.

In addition to modes such as Versus and Training that will feature new enhancements, Street Fighter X Tekken will include Tag Team combat -- where players select two fighters to deliver knockout assist attacks and special combos.

The announcement was made at the special Street Fighter panel during San Diego's Comic-Con by the producer of Street Fighter X Tekken, Yoshinori Ono, and Tekken series project leader, Katsuhiro Harada.

Commenting on the origins of this project, Yoshinori Ono said: “This is history we're making. Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn't just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. So I'm going to give it my all.”

In addition, as reported on by 1UP.com from the panel, there will be a second game called Tekken X Street Fighter, produced by Namco Bandai's Tekken team, which'll play more like a traditional Tekken title. No further details or screenshots of this second title were made available.

Wait, what? Two games... Two companies... Nearly the same name. Almost the same game. Same genre...

And I thought using two different engines for multi-player and single player was a bit silly, but this tops the cake.

It's not too silly. They'll play much, much differently.

An example of silly was the "Capcom vs SNK" and "SNK vs Capcom" games. Both were 2D fighters and played more similarly than SFvT and TvSF will. However, CvS2 turned out to be an amazing fighter played competitively for years, and SvC really pushed the Neo Geo to the limits.

Not a big fan of Tekken, but i guess this opens the door for Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter and vice versa. THAT will be awesome :)

I'm looking forward to the 2D game, but I would *love* to see a Pac-Man/Mega Man crossover based on what's shown at the end of that trailer.

Clay Fighters versus Shaq FU!!!!!! Anyone? ... *crickets chirping*

I am a sad panda that this is not coming to the PSP.

This is big news. I'm curious to see how the mechanics are going to work. Honestly, Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat sounds more feasible now. Ah old 90's fantasies... I like Thomas's idea to throw Shaq Fu into the mix, that would make me a happy panda.

I would be more excited if this was Super Street Fighter IV Turbo.

I expect SFxT and TxSF to play very differently as well. I didn`t mind CvsSNK and SNKvsC despite their similarities either.

Not really looking forward to SF vs. MK and would rather see an MK vs. KI just because both were dial a combo fests. At the same time, if Tekken can be molded into the SF vein, then MK can too.

If there was an MK vs. SF, I guess you`d have to tap forward twice with a punch to throw a fireball with Ryu, eh.
