Saling The World: Mafia II Leads UK Multiplatform Sales

Gamasutra's weekly column, "Saling The World", covers the top five sellers for every available platform in the United States, Japan, and Europe, providing an important update of sales patterns worldwide.

This week's charts, with data taken from August 26th, 2010, find 2K's Mafia II heading Xbox 360 and PS3 software sales in Europe, while Madden NFL 11 and StarCraft II continue to lead the charts in North America.

Data for "Saling The World" comes courtesy of the public sales information on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.co.jp, with sales split out for each platform and territory, and pre-orders disregarded. This results in a true sense of what games are selling worldwide on the real-time updated service, as follows:

Nintendo Wii
North America: 1. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo), 2. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo), 3. Wii Fit Plus with Balance Board (Nintendo), 4. Gold's Gym Dance Workout (Ubisoft), 5. Just Dance (Ubisoft).

Japan: 1. Wii Party (Nintendo), 2. Dragon Quest Monsters: Battle Road Victory (Square Enix), 3. Wii Fit Plus with Balance Board (Nintendo), 4. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo), 5. Sengoku Basara 3 (Capcom).

UK: 1. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo), 2. Just Dance (Ubisoft), 3. Dance on Broadway (Ubisoft), 4. Wii Fit Plus with Balance Board (Nintendo), 5. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo).

Super Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Wii Fit Plus remain Nintendo's top software sellers in North America. Ubisoft also wins big with Just Dance and its recently released workout title Gold's Gym Dance Workout.

Nintendo's minigame compilation Wii Party continues to do brisk business in Japan, meanwhile, as Ubisoft's Just Dance and Dance on Broadway compete with Super Mario Galaxy 2 for top honors in the UK.

Xbox 360
North America: 1. Madden NFL 11 (EA Sports), 2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision), 3. Mafia II (2K Games), 4. Red Dead Redemption (Rockstar), 5. Halo 3 (Microsoft).

UK: 1. Mafia II (2K Games), 2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision), 3. Red Dead Redemption (Rockstar), 4. BioShock 2 (2K Games), 5. Assassin's Creed II (Ubisoft).

2K's sandbox-style crime drama Mafia II debuts at third place in North American Xbox 360 software sales, as Madden NFL 11 and Modern Warfare 2 stay on top of the regional charts.

Monster Hunter Frontier Online and Cave's shooter Deathsmiles IIX lead the rankings in Japan, while Mafia II premieres as the platform's top seller in Europe.

PlayStation 3
North America: 1. Madden NFL 11 (EA Sports), 2. Red Dead Redemption (Rockstar), 3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision), 4. Mafia II (2K Games), 5. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (SCEA).

Madden NFL 11 and Red Dead Redemption stay on top of the PlayStation 3 software sales charts in the United States, as 2K's Mafia II debuts behind Modern Warfare 2 at fourth place.

Mafia II fares better in the UK, where it tops weekly platform sales in its first week of release. Banpresto's A.C.E.: Another Century's Episode R spends another week at first place in Japan, with Sengoku Basara 3 trailing close behind.

A price-dropped Chrono Trigger competes with reigning chart champs New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS in the United States, as Pokemon SoulSilver and HeartGold claim the remaining spots in the domestic top five.

Nintendo's art training program Art Academy disappears from the UK charts following a first-place debut last week, though the Japanese version (Eigokoro Kyoushitsu DS) maintains steady sales in the face of competition from Konami's Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side 3rd Story and Love Plus+.
