Best of FingerGaming: From R-Type to Dodonpachi Resurrection

[Gamasutra rounds up sister iPhone and iPad site FingerGaming's top news and reviews for Apple's portable game platforms, as written by editor in chief Danny Cowan and authors Tucker Dean, Jason Johnson, and Ryan Hibbeler.]

This week, FingerGaming covers NHL 2K11 and the arcade shooter ports R-Type and Dodonpachi Resurrection.

Also within are the lists for top-grossing, most-downloaded free and paid Apps from Apple's store, as well as reviews for Solipskier and Osmos.

Here are the top stories from the last seven days:

- Top-Grossing Game Apps: Monster Dash Rivals Madden, Angry Birds
"Fruit Ninja creator Halfbrick Studios claims third place in this week's chart with its recently released autoscrolling action title Monster Dash. Clickgamer's Angry Birds retakes the top spot, pushing EA's Madden NFL 11 to second place."

- Cave Brings Manic Arcade Shooter Dodonpachi Resurrection to the App Store
"ESPGaluda II developer Cave has released its second arcade-ported shooter for the iPhone -- Dodonpachi Resurrection, an enhanced version of its 2008 vertically scrolling bullet hell-styled shoot-'em-up."

- Review: Osmos
"Sustainability is a key concept in Osmos. Players control a single-cell organism in search of subsistence in a blob-eat-blob world. Your organism has aspirations. It wants to consume and grow, but there are risks."

- 2K Sports Brings Limited-Release NHL 2K11 to iPhone 3GS
"Hockey fans have few options when it comes to this year's edition of 2K Sports' NHL 2K franchise. The latest update, NHL 2K11, debuts as an exclusive for the Nintendo Wii and iOS devices."

- Top iPad Game Apps: Gameloft's Avatar Leads After Price Drop
"After leading last week's chart with its price-dropped N.O.V.A., Gameloft once again heads iPad game sales with its discounted game adaptation of James Cameron's Avatar."

- New on iPad: Karate Champ XL, Color Cross HD, Supermarket Management HD
"New iPad-exclusive offerings have been slim in the App Store lately, but here's a few notable releases that popped up this week, including new versions of the one-on-one fighter Karate Champ and the Picross-like puzzler Color Cross."

- Irem's Landmark Arcade Shoot-'Em-Up R-Type Arrives on iPhone
"R-Type set high standards for the shooters that followed in the wake of its initial arcade release. R-Type boasts multiple subweapons, a chargeable laser, and a deployable force unit that doubles as a shield when attached to your ship."

- Review: Solipskier
"The game casts the player in the role of the architect, drawing the ski slope across the screen with his finger and shepherding a skier through gates, around barriers, and over jumps for some mad air."

- Top iPhone Game Apps: Discounted NFL 2011 Beats EA's Madden NFL 2011
"Gameloft finds chart success this week with price drops for The Oregon Trail and NFL 2011, the latter of which proves popular enough to bump EA's competing Madden NFL 11 out of chart range."

- New Potato Launches Pinball Magic App and Miniature Table Accessory
"New Potato's peripheral, a miniature replica pinball machine shell that attaches to an iPhone's 30-pin port, allows players to experience pinball's mechanical sights and sounds while playing a table displayed on the iOS device's touch screen."
