Final Fantasy XIII Xbox 360 Confirmed For Japan

Following a series of leaks in the Japanese gaming press, Square Enix has confirmed Final Fantasy XIII will finally release on the Xbox 360 in Japan this winter. Previously, only the PlayStation 3 version of the game had been available in the territory.

Asked why there had been such a delay in bringing the Xbox 360 version of the game to Japan, producer Yoshinori Kitase said: “We feel that there are…a lot of people in Japan who own nothing but 360s. Thanks to the new [Slim] system and such, the situation’s a lot different than it was in July 2008.”

Following series tradition, the release will be an international edition featuring content from the Western versions of the game not present in the Japanese original.

Dubbed Final Fantasy XIII Ultimate Hits Edition, the title will be available from December 16 for the budget price of ¥4,980, ($60) according to the latest issue of Famitsu.

The release will be the first Xbox 360 title in Square’s Ultimate Hits budget line and will feature an easy mode, a post-completion quest titled ‘Episode I’, the English voice-acting from the western release and portions of the reportedly large amount of content that was cut from the original release.

The game’s director, Motomu Toriyama, also told Famitsu that plans for Final Fantasy XIII downloadable content had been scrapped following the game's original release. He had previously advised players to “hold on to their saves from the end of the game” but in this week’s interview said: “that plan [for DLC] wound up not happening.”

In May Square-Enix reported FFXIII had sold 5.5 million copies of the game.

HAHAHA.

Why did they even ever bother telling us otherwise?

No one finds this surprising. Nice Square Enix, Nice. At least you've had the decency to maintain the charade of a genuine pseudo-exclusivity for several months; that's actually a better job than Capcom did with RE4 (announcing the PS2 version with added features WEEKS before the GC's release after years of delays), or the crap EA are currently pulling with NBA JAM (releasing an HD, online enhanced version with a 'free' second game on the HD systems to the Wii's 'exclusive' with it's 'extra' game mode). Bravo Square Enix Eidos. Kudos.

Yes. I do. The shenanigans of 3rd parties' platform decisions and PR combined with their near predictability has left a persisting bad taste in my mouth over the last couple of years. Either something should be exclusive or something shouldn't. There are benefits to making a game for all platforms, and also for making it exclusive, but getting one audience excited and then fudging them over for an audience they apparently prefer is, well, rude. And the best FUs are usually reserved for Nintendo fans with limited budgets, though there are other doozies. I can't stand the asymmetry of it all.

I honestly don't blame him. SquareEnix has been known for these shenanigans for the longest. It's a shame that no one really even takes real wind to it because it's SquareEnix.

They're doing the same kind of stuff with XIV in how they're portraying their "amazing class system" and whatnot or how you can be "anything", but not going into detail of how the re-allocation of points to change into "anything" is nearly ridiculous to get done.

They're horrible with their pitches and I typically expect false promises out of them nowadays.

Merc I agree, although I'm not so "incensed" personally. But I think these companies will end up shooting themselves in the foot, as I wonder as to the appeal of something being exclusive. For instance if NBA Jam had remained a wii exclusive would it have sold a lot more than it (probably) will now? As a multiplatform game the audience may just give a collective shrug.

Easy mode? How much easier can this game get, really?

I think this was an obvious and reasonable choice. They have the build of the game all set up, they probably need next to no work to get it out on Japan so it's like profit for almost no expenditures.

I think the only reason they made it seem as if it was an exclusive for a while was that they were afraid Japanese gamers might forgo the game altogether, just a shot in the dark.
