McDonald's and social game developer Zynga held a one-day FarmVille promotion in the U.S. last week, introducing an area and virtual items themed after the fast food restaurant in the farming simulator.

Working with virtual goods firm Appsavvy and OMD, the companies debuted a McDonald's Farm to the popular social game, which players could interact with from their own farms. They were able to visit the branded farm and help grow tomato and mustard seed crops.

Players that interacted with the McDonald's farm received a FarmVille McCafe consumable, a virtual good fashioned after the fast food chain's coffee line. The McCafe consumable gave players' characters more energy to move around their farms at twice the speed.

The game also rewarded users who helped out at the McDonald's Farm with a "Hot Air Balloon FarmVille Decoration", which they can place in their own farms. McDonald's introduced other initiatives to its virtual farm, too, such as its 2010 Monopoly Game, a Sesame Seed Bakery, and a Dairy Farm.

"Joining forces with FarmVille is an incredible opportunity for us to engage with millions of players in the most popular social game," says McDonald's USA's media director Anja Carroll. "What makes our FarmVille effort unique is that it reinforces important features of the McDonald's brand while enhancing game play for FarmVille players."
