Sony has slashed a further 30 ($48) from the price of its PSP Go handheld in the UK. The system, for which content can only be digitally downloaded, is now available for sale for 129 ($207) in the UK Sony Store in both black and white versions.

The price reduction comes just weeks after the company lowered the unit's sale price around the globe. At the end of October, the system was reduced to 159.99 ($258) from 199.99 ($321) in the UK.

The combined effect of these reductions means that, in just three weeks, the PSP Go price has dropped $114 in the UK.

The system has no UMD drive, limiting content to digital downloads. According to Sony, as of the end of September, PSP Go owners have access to over 590 game titles, 1,250 pieces of video content, and 2,200 comic episodes. However, analysts have pointed to the inability to transfer existing UMD discs to digital format is also a barrier to entry for potential buyers.

The PSP Go hardware launched in North America and the UK on October 1 last year for $249 and 224.99, respectively.

[UPDATE: Following this report, Sony clarified to UK trade press site (registration required) that the discounting was due to a "website error". The company has not clarified whether it will be honoring the price for users who bought the system at the erroneously-discounted price.]

Still has the worst analog/D-pad layout if your trying to play Monster Hunter.

Sony has had a nearly unbelievable string of blunders this cycle. Though I doubt that this one will have any real affect sales as they seem to be rather anemic for the Go. Hopefully they will learn from this and self correct on the follow-up product, but who knows?

This period in Sony's gaming history will go down as its darkest - losing a seemingly unbeatable lead within the console world (both in terms of goodwill and sheer numbers) and massively fumbling what should have been a built-in core for mobile gaming. RIP Go, we hardly knew ya.

Is it any real surprise? Sony should have improved its Walkman technology instead of letting Apple dominate the portable music market. Sony also should dominate the HD TV market but instead gave up its dominate role to companies like LG, Samsung, and Panasonic. Sony has been mismanaged for years into a downward spiral....
