In the last few days before Christmas (although holiday celebrations are generally held later in Japan) the Japanese charts have shown a dramatic swing towards older, mostly Nintendo published, products.

Mario Party 5, first released at the end of November, has lead the charge in the only top ten all year in which a majority of titles are not for the PlayStation 2. The only new release in the top ten is Full Metal Alchemist - Square Enix’s newest RPG.

Nintendo has experienced a similarly buoyant week of hardware sales, coming the closest to matching the PlayStation 2 for many months. The GameCube enjoyed a market share of 28.33%, compared to 34.77% for PlayStation 2, 36.09% for combined Game Boy Advance sales and 0.55% for the Xbox.
