In advance of the release of Serious Sam 3: BFE, developer CroTeam and publisher Devolver Digital have opened the recently revived first-person shooter license to three well-known indie developers, who are using it for three highly different takes on the franchise.

The Serious Sam Indie Series will include titles from Mommy's Best Games (Shoot 1UP), Be-Rad Entertainment (Lame Castle) and Vlambeer (Super Crate Box), to be released in the coming months for "everything from PCs to mobile platforms to consoles," according to an announcement.

Mommy's Best Games's Serious Sam: Double D will re-imagine the series as a 2D, side-scrolling shooter with hand-drawn artwork; Be-Rad's Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack! will take the form of a mobile "auto-runner" game where players control hordes of headless kamikazes attacking Sam; and Vlambeer's Serious Sam: The Random Encounter will use the series' universe and characters as the basis for a standard role-playing game.

"Croteam has always been proud to be an independent studio working on something that we created ourselves and truly love making each game," said Croteam CEO Roman Ribaric. "We wanted to put our beloved Serious Sam in the hands of some of today's best indie developers out there and see what they would come up with."

Double D and Random Encounter will both be playable at the PAX East convention in Boston this weekend.

A Gamasutra analysis of Xbox Live Arcade leaderboards saw last January's Serious Sam HD selling at least 35,000 copies in its first month, though an October follow-up on the service seems to have sold much more slowly at release.
